Hi, I have a question for our Hong Kong man. That sounds great if you're making that kind of money (82K American a year), but what kind of hours are you putting in? I'll make about 60K this year as a university lecturer in Japan, and we also take some vacations. I teach about 27 hours a week (six of that non-uni), but preparation/homework /test correcting time eats into some of my other leisure time. I work 6 days a week, and travel out 4x a week (will change to 3x next semester) about 70-90 minutes away.
Like you, with the breaks from mid July to mid September and mid January to early April, I go to 4 days a week and a more minimal schedule. I expect my income yo be higher next year, as I'll have more classes with paid holidays. During those times, my wife and I go away 2-3 weeks to Europe and some shorter Asian trips. last year, total, I took off 7 weeks notincluding the Japanese holidays when I don't work but get paid through the university.
I know some other teachers that take up to 36 hours a week teaching, but I feel I am not ready for that load, unless I have a lot of repeat classes, classes that are only confined to the text (some unis have these, mine don't, I actually have some no text classes where I combine my own material with things I have collected), or a lot of the same classes (in otherwords, you can use the same lesson plan for different class periods).
I am also wondering, what kind of size classes do you have (with kids it raises the stress level as the classes get bigger) and are you teaching alone or with an assistant? |

| A friend of mine has been teaching in Saudi Arabia for over 5 years. He's got a rent free apartment, 4 week vacation pay and works only 20 hours a week. Basically, he's got virtually no expenses. Everything he makes, $60,000 US goes to the bank. Do the math. Yet, he's not crazy about the job because there is nothing to do in the desert. He's an artist so spends much time painting and reading. According to him no one survives in SA for more than 2 years. |

| That is the rub- the hellholes are more lucrative than paradise. This goes for other fields as well. I know doctors who made a killing in the rural midwest or southwest and wouldn't be able to make more than 50K in the northeast. (U.S.) |

Not a large contradiction here really. This guy in SA deals very well with loneliness, is very flexible when it comes to new cultures, and has no family. You can't say that about many people. |

Looking at your signature, it's surprising that you feel the need to defend any contradictions you make ... |

I read and re-read it and will put my hands up if guilty but I can't for the life of me make sense of it logically ...
| Quote: |
| People who believe in God are not stupid, but all stupid people believe in God. |
'All stupid people believe in God' but 'stupid people' are part of the more general group 'people', who we are told also 'believe in God' but are 'not stupid'. That is, 'stupid people' operate as the (part/whole) subjects of both clauses - clauses which are contradictory.
If the phrase ran ...

... it would make sense ... to me |

The quote is similar to J.S. Mill's who said CONSERVATIVES ARE NOT STUPID, BUT ALL STUPID PEOPLE ARE CONSERVATIVE. This means that the stupid people are among the groups that are conservative.

One source attributes this to Mill:
"Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives." |

I further believe that the statement applies even better when referring to people who believe in God, so...
I rest my case. |

Actually this makes perfect sense as well. The word order is unusual, and one has to pause in the proper places, but it exemplifies at the same time it expresses a warning against too much pride in one's powers of observation. I also think the emotional outrage at the rationality of his signature is overwhelming his critics' ability to recognize grammer. I hope I fall in the category of non-stupid people who beleive in God, myself.
Edited for your amusement

I'm so glad that I've provided an opportunity for some of you guys to criticize my word order and the rationality of my sentences. After all, how else would an EFL teacher fight his/her profound sense of uselessness if not by criticizing another teacher's "shortcomings"?
BRAVO! Can you hear my hands clapping?! |
