It would have to be complete and utter immersion...I'm talking about total isolation from any sort of english distractions to be able to hold conversations with the locals in 5 weeks.
Just my thoughts.
When I hang out with my chinese friends, they usually tell me to shut up and speak English because they can't stand my shitty chinese. Great language partners. |

 Of course, he (Scott, Omeida students) spoke some English when he hang around in the bars and cafes. But he tried to speak Chinese as much as possible when he was learning here. |

| any other good schools you guys can recommend? "omeida" looks pretty good but my coworder said that he paid $500 a semester in Taiwan when he has working towards his MA... so, although those prices may look OK I think there may be much better out there, unless the curriculuum really rocks... he has also advised that that area of China is riddled with dialects other than Mandarin standard... ? i really have no idea, please post some further useful information... thanks y'all... |

There are many good schools in Beijing, Shanghai and Taiwan. Yes, you can get a course cheaper than $500 a semester. Price depends on the quality, curriculum, teaching concepts and... Good teachers speak standard mandarin. The most important is that your teacher must speak mandarin well. There is a fact, you know, most of Chinese don�t speak �pure� mandarin with accent, but they can communicate well. At the same time, most English speakers speak with accents. This is my thought. |
