I am helping a friend find a good language school in Dalian. He is basically looking for a friendly work atmosphere with kind and helpful people in charge. Does anyone know a place with a good reputation among teachers?
Thanks |

If your friend has the qualifications (especially a degree) I strongly recommend they check into the universities there. There are quite a number and it seems I have seen ads from some of them in various places recently. The pay at some of the unis is beginning to rival that of the private schools, and in general the treatment received is likely to be a lot better and the teaching experience is going to be much more satisfying.
Dalian seems to be becoming somewhat notorious for awful private language schools...my advice is to stay away from all of them. I didn't know of any good ones when I was there (including the one I worked at), and subsequent comments have not changed that perception.
Dalian is one of the best cities in China to live in, though, so good luck!

okashi I can only support the advice MTN gave you...your friend should stay away (if possible) from the private schools and head for the universities, e.g. Dalian Maritime University, the Medical University, the University of Technology, etc. The pay could be better but of all the people I met who worked at the universities...they all stayed, often beyond their initial assignment...and that should say something. Either way, your friend should get in contact with previous/current teachers...and make sure he doesn't end up at a place far outside of town unless he really wants to (Dalian does cover a huuuuge area and it can get a bit lonely if you can't just hop on a bus and be downtown in ten minutes). And why not recommend this site for some initial information?
MTN...where did you teach when you were in Dalian? I wasn't very lucky with schools there either But yes, the city itself I wouldn't want to miss. |

Ferne,
I am reluctant to reveal my Dalian employer here because they have a nasty fascist tendency to threaten Dave S with legal action unless he removes threads that might suggest this employer is anything short of wonderful. Let's just leave it as "Anonymous English School." They have several large schools around Dalian now, but who knows what will happen in The Future....

I have a whole list of Universities and their contacts for teaching positions, along with people who can help find other teaching jobs. I was looking for a University job for the fall this summer and I talked to alot of universities. I have alittle info. on different contacts, written out on ms word. If you want it I will email it to you. |

Perhaps I'm flogging a dead horse, but I have to agree. Avoid the private schools and head for the institutes. That said, I'm working in my second private school, and it seems an improvement on the first. Depending on how this year goes, I may stay a third year in DL. Travesty21, could you share your contact list with me too, please? |
