So here is my situation. I have only 1 and a half month left on my 1 year work visa (which I acquired through NOVA). Back when they asked me three months ago, I had opted not to renew my contract. Just recently plans have changed in a big way and now I'm spinning my wheels seeing if there is anyway to get a new job and VISA in less than a month and a half.
I talked to GABA and they told me that I would have needed at least 4 months left on my work visa in order for them to think of hiring me and sponsoring a new one. Anyone know if it is possible to find a new job (most likely teaching english) that would sponsor a new work visa for me on such short notice?? Am I out of my mind? |

Kevin, if you get really stuck you can change your expiring work visa to a tourist visa and immigration will give you 90-days. that gives you a bit of breathing space. Of course dont tell immigration you are job-hunting in that time until you find a new sponsor.
Its my guess there is no actual policy at most companies about how long you have to work at your previous company for them to sponsor you- its an individual thing and theres no reason they cant sponsor you straight way. Working for GABA you would actually be going backwards, anyway. |

thanks for the reply Paul! Just out of interest, would I be able to remain in Japan while changing to a Tourist visa, or would I have to leave and then re-enter with a Tourist visa?

Never done it myself but I believe you can change your status without leaving Japan. Just apply for a change of period of stay status at immigration. You can NOT work during this time. Immigration wont give you any problems, just as long as you are here legally and dont overstay your visa.
Immigration may ask you to leave Japan when you find a sponsor and change to a new work visa in Korea. It depends on the mood of the immigration official you deal with. Nowadays you can do the whole thing without leaving Japan but like I say, it's 'case-by-case'. |

Have you already burned your bridge with Nova? If not, why not stay with them? Gaba, from all I've heard, is the worst of the worst. 1,400 yen per hour??? Not much better than McDonalds. |

I thought GABA had its visa sponsorship privileges revoked for falsifying documents for some of its workers. |

No but I gave my resignation into Nova in October. Then plans changed dramatically for me just after the New Year, so too late with Nova. |

Yes, but you could swallow your pride and unless they have already replaced you, you could approach them about staying or even transferring to another branch where they need you (if they have already arranged for a replacement for you at your original branch). |
