Just a quick question. I'm off to Quito soon for a year teaching and i'm not sure whether to take my mobile with me.
Can i take my English mobile with me and simply buy a new SIM card out there? My phone has been unlocked so it can take any SIM card. Does Ecuador have a 'pay as you go' system like in Europe or do you have to subscribe to a long term contract? And can you send international texts?
Many thanks, Matt Ridgway |

Not all mobiles are the same, and not to confuse people, in the Americas they're called cell phones.
In Europe, the networks generally use GSM900 and GSM1800 - the number stands for Megahertz. Here in Mexico, my mobile uses GSM1900, which is a special format designed for those countries that didn't have the original 900, and 1800 frequencies available. My old Orange phone could use either GSM900, or GSM1800, but not GSM1900. I used to be a telecoms engineer.
In short, these's a fair chance that you'll have to buy a new handset out here. Assuming that your phone isn't already tripleband.
