Ah snorkelqueen reminded me of a wonderful dining experience I had on one of my "border runs"
We stopped in the middle of nowhere for lunch (comida) I think somewhere in the state of Chihuahua. As soon as I got off the bus, the smell of the grill and the relatively simple (compared to Central Mexican food) Norteo food was intoxicating. I lived in Arizona for 11 years and really got hooked on norteo/border food that wasnt Tex/Mex.
The grilled chicken I ate was to die for.
However, experiences like that are rare. Usually the food available (esp in the terminals) is crappy.
The lesson here is... when the bus driver stops at a restaurant - do eat! Like truck drivers, they know where the good spots are.
Now a got a craving for tacos de carne asada Sonoran-style *sigh* |

| In my part of Mexico, bus drivers stop at restuarants where they will eat for free! Its always at least 5 km out of anytown so that everyone on the bus has to eat there too, the driver eats for free in exchange for providing customers! |

Same here with the tour guides. One of my coworkers worked part-time as a tour guide for a while. Tour company didn't pay very well, but he made decent money from kickbacks from the souvenir shops and other businesses where he took groups of tourists. |
