Does anyone have books that they can recommend? I am always on the lookout for good fiction titles, either old or recent, but especially recent.
Over the weekend I attended my cousin's wedding. I made the mistake of reading a book about the decline of the family and the human species while I was there. What a downer! But the novel is a must-read-- I recommend it as one of the most important books of the new millenium. Its called
The Elementary Particles by Michel Houellebecq--
(Also called Atomised in the UK edition.)
Another, older, is the Malaysian Trilogy by Anthony Burgess.

Depending on your mood and goal (entertainment, education, spiritual enlightment), here are a few suggestions:
Tom Clancy: Any book prior to 1992. I enjoyed most of them, but the details of the military instruments, etc., got old.
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende.
The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield
Zen Mind-Beginners Mind by Suzuki
Walden - Henry David Thoreau
A Seperate Peace - John Knowles
Siddhartha - Herman Hesse (and most of his other books, ie: Narcissus and Goldman)
All Janet Evanovich books starting with One for the Money and concluding with the recently released "To the Nines"
The Hobbit and all the others in the series (the movies were bad, IMHO)
Hope for the Flowers - Trina Paulus
Taking Stock: Animal Farming and the Enviornment - Alan Durning & Holly Brough
Vegetarian Times - (magazine)
Lonely Planet Guide to (fill in this space) |

Check out the "DING! John S." thread on the Saudi Arabia forum (http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=3384). Someone asked johnslat for some reading recommendations and he came up with a ton. Actually, just wading through his lengthy lists should keep you occupied for some time. |

Do not, I repeat - do not read a Seperate Peace. I know it is a standard in many schools but IMO it is <<<lame>>>.
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Heinlein). |
