Hey, everybody. I was wondering how one goes about paying U.S. taxes while living overseas; I just wanted to know how that works. Thanx in advance.

Contact your nearest embassy or consulate to get the forms. Americans have to file for taxes, but they are exempt from paying on money earned overseas up to about $80,000. Don't know what your other income or finances back home looks like. Use the 2555 form to declare the money you made overseas along with your 1040 long form.

Oh, and you have until June 15th to file. However, if you have to pay anything (from taxes on earnings back home), you can still be fined or interest will still start if you file after April 15th.

Is this a "per year" amount or a "total" amount?

I don't understand.

If you make US$80,000 overseas during the 12 months for the tax period... that's what it means.

So, it's yearly as well as a total. A total for 12 months, whether you worked in Japan for a day or 365 days.

I had read that it wasn't a cap "per year" as it was a "total" amount earned over X amount of years. The original post did not clarify as to if it was dealing with a particular tax period. I do appreciate the clarification!
