I am wondering once the Czech Republic and Poland start using the Euro what it will do to teacher wages and cost of living?

Will it be harder for a teacher to make a decent wage for rent, food etc?

Will the cost of living go up?

I am thinking about teaching abroad in another year and a half, do you see any other major changes takinig place? Will it be even hard for Americans to find work?

Sorry to ramble...

Thanks
Jamie

It's already a bit tough on a teacher's salary in Prague. Rents are relatively quite high, and if you've got debts back home or if you want to go out a lot, you'll find that the living is quite tight. Also, while it is still common for North Americans to get work permits for the Czech Republic, EU member citizens are already preferred by many employers.
This speaks strictly for Prague, though - in smaller towns in the CR, it's a bit easier to maintain standard of living. Poland usually has a more urgent need for teachers than the CR, but I'm not sure myself about current legal restrictions (to what extent EU member citizens are favored) and I'm not sure about standard of living available to teachers at entry-level positions.

I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it, Jamie. Their target date for joining is 2009-2010, and they'd have to 'qualify' first, which at the moment they don't.

A more realistic entry date appears to be 2012-2013, if what I've read is to be believed, so there's a fair while yet.

Poland and the Czech Republic won't be joining until at least 2010. The only new EU countries which may join before then are Estonia and Slovenia.

Wages in Poland are very competitive except in Warszawa where it may be more difficult given the cost of living. In Poland on a EFL salary you'll live a very good style of living.
