I was a bit bored and decided to check out how many users had registered and then decided not to post.

Total user = 3753
total users (no posts) = 2065

Why would people bother to register and then not post anything? Any ideas?

I'm one of those people who registered and never posted (until now, of course). The reason is that I am not teaching yet, and I'm not even trained to teach yet so I don't have a lot to actually contribute at this point.
I do, however, read through the boards daily and have learned a lot, not only about teaching in general, but about different areas of the world where I might want to teach in the future. I am very much in the information-gathering phase and find that most questions I come up with are answered on here already so I haven't yet had an original question to ask. It's been a GREAT resource for me, though!!
So thanks to everyone on here who IS posting regularly!!

I signed up for the Korean forum a while ago. I had contimplated going there. But common sense kicked in and I decided not to go (horror stories about work - not the posters there.) So I have a username but I've never posted there.

Some other people wander about the net signing up for every board like this they can.

I spend most of my day talking!
Sometimes I just like to read what others have to say.

It's the same all over the Net, I've been surfing for years and years. The number of posters is always a small fraction of the total membership. The non-posters are usually referred to as 'lurkers'. It's human nature to look before you leap. Smile

Let's get the real stats!

How many have been banned?
Are they still included in the total registered or were they deleted when banned?
How does the number of registered effect the advertising rates?

How do the individual number of posts effect the advertising rates.
Each time a poster uses this free service, how much advertising revenue does it generate?

I say - Business First - not - English First!!!

I'm glad you asked Cobra. Advertizement return can be calculated simply by multiplying coefficients a and r /(divided) by t, given t is fixed. However, if t is not fixed, you would then multiply t by d (duration) to find tt (total rate, I don't know why it's tt, nobody does). Taking into account diminished returns and the law of averages, I've come up with the following numbers:

Roughly 23% of registered users have clicked on the TEFL banner. As you can see that's quite high according to Oppenheimer's Theorem. That's because we haven't taken into account the degree of error. Laymen's terms, "how many of us have accidentally clicked on the banner?" Based on that 23% we can then extrapolate (again, using the formula above) that 3% have made purchases based off of the TEFL banner. But wait! Not all three percent went to the TEFL company. That would have been quite a return on investment indeed. Using standard market theory we can deduce that of that 3% only .7 (.7!) of the purchased products came from the before mentioned TEFL banner company. Take that and divide it by tt (again, above) and we can see the return on investment. Wha-lah! Okay, I just made all that up.

seriously,

dog

According to Shulgin's Law, para-editorial tasks increase in order to fill the time available, which leaves decreasing opportunities for banner clicking in a setting where ESL parameters are confined to a 23 1/2 hour week. Given such minimal constraints, all things being equal on a continuum in which every Schrodinger's cat has adequate electric breathing space, it may be deduced that extra-hortatory proofs can only follow on the gobbledegook of accepted marketing practices within a circumference of desirable means.

Furthermore, if triangular thinking and shaggy grammatical errors are ever going to go wrong, they will, as Murphy's Sperling Cafe Corollary so repeatedly reminds us. Given the predictable outcomes of nazi spelling bees and other instances of impromptu forced communicative balderdash, the implementation of Bertrand's Kowloon Hypothesis, having been tried and found wanting on the theory of EF acceptability, must be dismissed if the authorities in Marketing 101 wish to remain on good terms with the Grand Poobah of delectable balderdash.

In conclusion...

Gecko,

I suggest that one reason people do not post is that they do not want to get FLAMED, which happens quite frequently to many who do post. Some may think it is funny or a way to let off steam, but others tend not to like the experience, especially if what they post is not offensive or in ignorance because of lack of experience.

You sometimes get flamed for pointing out obvious truths !

If you have the temerity to point out that there are not many jobs in Burkina Faso some looney will flame you for being anti-Burkinawi. (Did you know that the adjective for Burkina Faso was "burkinawi ?).

Or point out that US citizens need a visa to work in the EU and you will be accused of being a vile anti-American.

Sheeech !

Yes they are. People are not banned and removed from the membership. I know at least two people who have had their accounts made inactive but still appear on the members list.
