Living in Bangkok there is something one is very aware of; There is a trail is hippy type backpacker people that parade through this city contantly. They are young, free, and move to where the next rumor of a good beach or cool hang out lies. The trail goes through places like Goa India, Bangkok, Koh Phang ngan, Koh Samui Thailand, Peneng Malaysia, Bali Indonesia and points onward from there and around the world.
These spots tend to be places where the living is cheapest and the fun the most interesting.
In Mexico and Central America...
Where does the "hippy trail" go? |

Not sure where it starts or ends, but the nouveau hippies that pass through here come down from San Jose del Pacifico, a small mostly native town famous for the guided mushroom trips that are availabe, located smack dab in the middle of the sierra between the coast and Oaxaca city. Next stop is here, Zipolite, or the surrounding towns like Mazunte and San Agustonillo. THen its off to Guatemala and Central America via San Cristobal, Chiapas and Palenque.
And most of them can't wait to get to Guatemala because they have realised by this time that Mexico is NOT cheap by backpacker's standards. |

Whenever I manage to get downtown, I usually see a number of backpackers in the main park sitting next to their giant backpacks or wandering the streets in that leaning-into-the-wind fashion under the weight of those huge packs. I've never figured out what it is that attracts these folks to this city. Things aren't especially cheap here. There are no fun spots or gathering places in the city for backpackers. It's not located in a line between two big attractions in this part of the country. |

When I was doing the sweaty backpacker traipsing around Mexico thing, there were two reasons why I went to Merida...
1. Its one of the easiest places to get to after Palenque if you've come from San Cristobal and don't want to return.
2. Its near flamingoes (which I never ended up seeing) and also Uxmal, Kabah and some other ruin, and you can go from one of them straight to Cancun.
There's a great cafe there too, which sells cracking coffee - something like Cafe Habana? Anywhere in Mexico with good coffee has to be on my "must see" list! |

Loz, did you ever make it to Zacatecas? There's a great coffee joint across from the main cathedral there. |

I know!
Its called something like Cafe Atenas, or the Acropolis - something Greek. When I went there, I had been sans good coffee for about a month, and had been moping around over not being with some boy or other for that time. To put it mildly, I wasn't real happy. Then, I sipped my coffee, and ah! a smile that extended past the confines of my face, and made my friend wonder what on earth it was that was in my cup!
I even got her to take a photo of the happy moment! |
