im thinking about applying for work in china, and i think that i would be able to start working there around june 2007. is this a good time or should i wait until the school year potentially starts? for example, maybe in summer there are lots of students, or the other end, no one around. does anyone know when i would be finding more potential work?

You didn't tell us whether you want to teach in a public school or private language training center. Private language training centers have classes eyar-round so you can arrive and work in any month. Public schools, on the other hand, begin new school years in late August/early September and ends the term in early/mid January before resuming classes in late February/early March, then ends the school year in early/mid July. So arriving in June would be completely useless since classes would be finishing and you will be sitting around for 2 months before classes begin again. Also, it is WAY too early to apply for a 2007 position. Recruiters and employers are now looking for people to start in February/March 2006 (for public school positions). I would not bother until April/May 2007. |

tavin, tw's right. Chinese schools, whether they be public or training centers tend not to hire too much in advance. I have had so many schools ask me to appear almost immediately.
As for training centers, yes, they hire year-round, but know there is a hidden problem -- among so many other hidden problems -- with working in them during summer months. These training centers invest a lot in cosmetics. The ones I worked for previously in Nanjing (a very hot city in the summer), are often housed in sumptuous high-rise office buildings.
On first glance, they are impressive, but Jiangsu province (and all of China, actually) suffers from a serious power shortage, especially in summer. These glass-lined English centers become fishbowl-saunas in the summer, because they usually cut the A/C completely, either for cost purposes, or to comply with local energy-saving regulations. Whatever the reason, these places can be brutally hot during summer. If you're lucky, and complain while dripping sweat in your business attire, they might throw an electric fan your way. |
