Seems like a lot of posts about Guadalajara lately so I thought I would add one more. Surprised

I'm flying in to Guadalajara on Feb 7th and planning to stay for a few days and then tour the area for a few weeks looking at cities and potential places to teach. Any advice or info. on where to stay, how to get around, etc. would be very, very much appreciated! I'm a first time visitor to Mexico.

If you're looking to do it on the cheap, there are a number of hotels or hostels in the centro, close to Plaza de las Armas. Last time I went to GDL, I stayed at Hostel Guadalajara Centro, at the corner of Maestranza (appropriately) and Lopez Cotilla. I stayed in the dorm, but you can get a private room for under 200 pesos. This was some time ago, so I hope it's still there! Otherwise, walking around that are, you'll find other hotels.

There's this little hotel in Tlaquepaque, south of Guadalajara, called 'Where the Indian Sleeps'. It overlooks the main plaza. Nice there too.

What other cities/states do you plan to visit? You'll find forum members here from many different corners of the nation.

Thanks for your advice. It's much appreciated! I plan to check out Morelia, Queretaro, and Leon. That's only because all the guidebooks have info on those cities. San Miguel de Allende sounds great, as does Guanajuato, but I've been told not to expect a lot of opportunites because many Americans/Canadians already living there probably taking all the jobs.

I really don't know what to expect out of the rest of the country; whether there will be small towns I would like and whether there are teaching opportunities in the smaller towns. I'm 47 y/o and past the point of needing a "vibrant" night life like some of the younger teachers might want.

You'll find teaching opportunities in all those places, despite the high numbers of norteamericanos Don't take the first offer you get...

May I suggest a few other places in your area of travel? Aguascalientes (nice city, a little pricey, but with job opps) and north to Zacatecas for a one, maybe two day trip? Likely no work in Zacatecas, but a nice spot to visit. South from Guadalajara, I hear (though I haven't been) there are some fantastic smaller towns around Morelia, in Michoacan state.
