If a teacher is unhappy with a school, we should assume...
the school is probably guilty of at the very worst misleading the teacher about conditions and compensation.

a recruiter was likely to blame for promising more than the poor, victimized, under appreciated school could offer.

the post was undoubtedly a bit of slander from some devious rival school or recruiter.

the teacher is an American and would never be able to hack it so why bother.

Case by case analysis seems to break down on this forum, and more often then not most of the vets have long ago taken sides in this endless debate. I'd love to see where the chips stack up. Don't tell me it depends on the situation; I want to know how you felt before you understood anything about the situation.

If you can suggest additional options, please do so!

2 more categories: The classes are in anarchy with cell phones, sleeping, private conversations in Chinese etc. There is systemic academic failure of promotion without any mastery of the subject.

Really. I wouldn't be happy with that deal.

I believe in a fair days work for a fair days pay.

I believe that employers should treat us fairly and that we should act fairly towards employers.

Now, thats fair isn't it! Wink

Mapleheart,
I can certainly understand that you could interpret this posting in that light... only the original poster knows the true spirit of their intentions -- but this American, who has been challenged/attacked quite a bit lately in this forum, finds the poll rather humorous. In my mind, the poster is just trying to illustrate the battle lines he sees drawn repeatedly throughout this forum. I dunno... I laughed when I saw it...

Attacked? I think that is a bit dramatic.

You raised the issue that in your opinion Chinese schools and the people who run them are unethical. I disagreed that this applies to everyone and I asked you questions about how you felt it so. You chose not to answer any of those questions which is your right but doesn't help you reinforce your point. Rolling Eyes

Wait, didn't all of you know that all of us Americans drive 73 Ford Pickup trucks, chew tobacco and fight change?

Seriously though, that's all we do. As we speak I am hunting deer, laughing my ass off at Jeff Foxworthy redneck jokes, throwing back a Bud Light, and saluting the flag.

Nobody will change my mind! I will go to Shanghai and teach all dem asians that us God Fearing Middle Americans could kick their ass if we went to war!

Shocked

Whoa, Clark!

Now who's being dramatic??? ...and only a few days ago you were telling ME to "chill"??? I'm not even referring to you, sir! Are you so vain that you interpret all unspecified references to be about you???

As for not answering all questions to your satisfaction... Since when do I need to justify everything I say and/or assert until you are convinced?

Perhaps this forum should be re-named "Clark and Roger's ESL Discussion Forum / FT Laboratory and Morgue," because I get the feeling all postings must pass your acid test, autopsy, and post-mortem.

I'll keep in mind that everything I post here you might consider a personal accusation. I suggest maybe you should increase your dosage...

Sorry, I'm one of those case-by-case types. I also find Middy has pegged an important point; miscommunication and misunderstanding on both sides is almost always a critical factor. So sue me for not wanting to take sides.

Now to give in to the OP's desire and give a wholly biased and unsubstantiated opinion. 3 years ago I wouldn't have hesitated to pick the first. No, not all Chinese employers are unscrupulous SOBs who'd sell their mothers for 5 jiao, but then the race isn't always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong. It just pays to bet that way. At least it usually did. I'm a little inclined though to think that things are slowly changing for the better. Perhaps this only reflects my own changing fortunes. I also know of several unhappy FTs, none of whom I would call a backpacking slacker.

Let me guess: the author of the poll runs a fly-by- night center and treated a teacher badly. The teacher , being most likely very busy already, decided to quit. If teachers aren't treated well and aren't appreciated that's what they will do. Maybe Chinese employers should finally stop all the lies and bull####, and then they would actually keep teachers longer.Teachers who are already very busy, won't put up with it.
As for the American comment, I , too, have seen many Brits,Canadians and Aussies quit, too. It isn't only Americans that do. I guess the author of the poll pissed off an American and he or she quit. Boo hoo. Treat people well and they will stay.
