Xining is not an average tourist's dream destination. It is relatively poor, and a long way from Hong Kong or Peking. Add to this the climate - nice temperate, but don't forget that cold winters mean you have to heat, which in this part of the world you do with coal.
I only passed through Xining once coming from Tibet to China. If you are after the experience of living among Tibetans (there are many outside Xining), XIning is not really the place to do that. Then again, this part of China sees so few expats that you might get a very cosy deal, who knows? |
