I expected the Orhan Pamuk case to be dropped. It had to be, a sort of graceful exit to a stupid case. The timing was about 20 years off.
I actually liked My Name is Red and parts of the Black Book.. I f inally got into Snow, but sometimes his writing is somewhat ponderous. Whatever, like other people, he is entitled to his opinion.
This undefined problem (was it a massacre? was it genocide?-- I think no to both) still causes problems, not only here. Several years ago someone wanted to start a Turkish Studies program at Portland State Univ and the Armenian community there protested because Turkey and Turkish culture are so bad. Of course probably none of the Armenians had ever been to Turkey or Armenia. They were Americans. I have had teachers of Armenian descent express a little trepidation about coming here to teach. This whole thing happened 100 years ago and needs to be put to rest. |

Thanks B.A ,would you like to expand on that a bit more esp whats a hyperbole ?
I'm sure you speak up on the forum here, but ,this is not the same as in the workplace , is it ? . Do you nail your colours to the mast then on a regular basis ? So when people dare to speak up here or say things that maybe you or others find annoying or irratting they get banned right ? Don't mean to wind you up or such just exercising a basic right . |
For sure, I was actually talking about life outside this forum, and using this place as an example. Yes, in my workplace I do speak up, as I did in the last place I worked.
My point is that some people, especially teachers in language schools, tend to moan and complain about very small issues and ignore the larger picture. For instance I've heard teachers complain about being asked to submit lesson plans, yet the same teachers kept their gob shut when I asked the DOS if we could perhaps have somebody to put into place some kind of standardised grading of students who do oral placement tests.
I've never asked nor expected anyone to banned from this forum because they irritaed or annoyed me. I can hold my own here thanks.
A good example of a hyperbole is when someone likens not being listened to in a staff meeting or not being able to call someone a n.igger with a serious issue like the infringement of freedom of speech.
So. I might not be agreed with in my workplace, and I may even be ignored sometimes, but I've never been threatened with jail or worse because of anything I've said.
Tell me this, in the Turkish classroom, it is illeagal to promote religion. Is this an attack on freedom of speech?

Thanks for clarifying that B.A, the hyperbole thing especially so the next time someone uses that word (highly unlikely) I will at least have aclue what they are on about .
I think we both go through phases at work where we feel the need to express a point, give an opinion,or make a comment which is either totally ignored or attacked with unnecessary force or even venom . that leaves you feeling isolated and angry or frustrated a place like Dave's is useful for letting off steam and getting it out of your system .On the religion issue ,too many people have tried preaching in the classroom this really should be avoided at alll costs . |

Hyperbole means total exaggeration
At English Time, teachers are specifically forbidden to proselytize in the classroom, though that does not mean that religion cannot be discussed in a balanced manner.
Also, regarding expressing one's opinion, at ET, that is generally welcomed, though sometimes I want to climb down the complainer's throat... We take suggestions and complaints into consideration and I think that most opinions are respected. Endless whining is not, however... |

Progress comes in small steps, dont froget the old army band that would take two steps forword and one back.
When I first got here there where no Kurds. only 'Mountain Turks'. To say the word in class was like asking for a one way ticket out.
Today alot has changed and more will change. Every nation has the right to reach a true level of freedom at its own pace.
The white Euro trash that tells Turkey to cleans its act, sat back less then 65 years ago as 6,000,000 + jews where killed.
Life here is like living in a work in progress.
One day you feel down and sad, then next you think things are getting better.
like I said TWO STEPS AHEAD ONE STEP BACK..... |

| Is there such a term as 'oldbie'? If not, there should be. I, like DMB have been taking time off from the forum. That doesn't mean we're one in the same person though. |
I've never seen you two in the same room together though. I'm starting to get suspicious |
