If you didn't have your sights set on Guangzhou / Shenzhen, I would have recommended that you apply to Tsing Hua University. Rolling Eyes

Why don't you try the sniper approach and contact schools that are advertising and need teachers rather than the rather labour intensive scattergun approach.

How did you cobble together that list of universities? As a matter of fact, these institutions are all in Guangzhou except Shenzhen University.

Shenzhen boasts 2 tertiary institutions: apart from Shenzhen University, there also is the Polytechnic.

I have never heard anything good about Shenzhen University (I lived in Shenzhen and one of my part-time employers would routinely receive foreign students enrolled at that university looking for teaching jobs).
Also we had a very distinguished poster, Peter Bol, who started his China English teaching career at Shenzhen University; his verdict was damning!

As for the Polytechnic, a Canadian couple applied for jobs there, then abandoned their project in favour of joing a Guangzhou-based university. The reason? They thought the FAO was not honest in making his job offers!

Now I am not trying to pull you to Guangzhou; few people love this city, and you have to bear in mind that a growing number of tertiary institutions have had to relocate, and others are following, to a so-called "University Megatown" in the boonies, home to over a dozen universities and some 30'000 students...

You also enquired about FOSHAN; it's a nondescript town some 20-plus kilometers SW of Guangzhou.
There is one univesity there, but I have no experience with them. I have just now been to Foshan - and I used to work in that part of Guangdong (or not far from it) several years back.
The town centre has some charm, but it's tiny; the outlying areas are ugly and industrial. What struck me today was the hickville character of so many local people: it wasn't amusing in the least to be hailed by a loud "hello!" (not that it was uttered in a friendly tone).
But I had a good time teaching at a college. Maybe you should give it a try, though I don't really know why you would want to settle in Guangdong.
In my opinion, the most welcoming place is Zhuhai, followed by Zhaoqing - the latter without any university!

Heyao mytime:

Grreat way with words dude!

You maybe think I am blowin smoke but I wanna be the best of the bunch so they pick me
If they advertise, then I am gonna be 1 in 100 no deal
But if I do door-knoking like this I might be in luck the right man right time etc

Anyway, I also apply for advertise jobs too but I reckon I might be swamped and like a lemon sitting at the lights watching the others make tracks

Thanks 3 buckets for the 10-4
onya!

Hello Roger,

WAYTOGO- thank you mountains for all you info!
Crisp and clean - you are the man in cowboy boots

I thought you was French like some other dudes but see you must learnt it as school

I was looking at this list and all the countries for a long time and worked out 2 countries where I might have a snowflake
Indonesai and China

Then I need midnight action stations something to do and palces to go and
and not cold I hate the cold
So its gotta be a big city right
Red too many sadstories about people out in the country feel like life was gonna end soon-- ohno
So there only big cities in the far south of China cause anywhere else has cold winter
I was thining of Hanan too but havent tuned anything up

So I do a gogle and keep looking and you can find a mountain load of stuff - many have a list and can contact them with e-mail or fax
My college helps me with free fax as part of job find

people say - do your research and I be searching a lot.
pedal down - no let up

I am straight this I have a certificate and diplomana (all completed in 2 years) but I have a couple of sparkling references and English is my proper language

So I know I not gonna be the professor or nothing like that
But what I am doing here in Oz washing and cleaning cars and dont wanna fall back into bad habits like my old buddies.

I read you lines about the teaching at uni in China and I know its no 4 foot right hander
I am used to shore break and breathing other peoples smoke

Anyway, I will give Zhuhia the goggle too and see what flashes up.

but I reckon by a few months, I will have the cash for my plane and a bit more and I will be onthe block
crisp Very Happy

Thanks so much so different from some of these other dudes here that think they are professor Einsten or some thing

Spiderman-Cidreman 2,
nah, I don't think I have the "most errant" posts in this forum; I say 'thank you', bro, for informing me that Zhaoqing does have a university NOW; it didn't have one when I toiled and sweated there a few summers back.
These days, colleges are upgraded by decree and involving a little pot de vin qui passe en dessous de la table.
I should have said "there are several well-reputed colleges" in Zhaoqing - when I was there I met students from a hospitality college (I think "hotel and tourism management college' or something), plus some foreign-invested school as well.

Please, Ytange is looking for a congenial place; it doesn't have to be a university; maybe a college does for him (hardly any significant difference anyway).

I also suggest he intensify his research; there are other nice places such as SHUNDE, Shantou, Conghua (no university), Zhongshan, Zhanjiang (a dump but that's between me and Speedoman).

Why would you want to work in GZ? The air pollution will shorten your life by 20 years. Stay near the coast if at all possible. Zhongshan's a nice place; small but close to GZ, SZ, HK, and Macau.
