It may well be that jeffinfloridas latest utterance is correct, but based on his track record, I wouldnt rely on his advice under any circumstances.
And Mytime, was your old style Z visa multiple entry? Apparently it was quite common (under the old system) for employers in Guangdong to obtain a multiple entry visa for F.T.s at the same time that they obtained the old booklet type F.R.P.s. |

which would explain why you never had to show, or hand in, your F.R.P. booklet.
Thank goodness for the new system; everyone gets multiple entry! |

I don't believemy previous post was misleading; I take it that Spiderman crossed the border with a valid visa that was good for a single entry; leaving the country AUTOMATICALLY invalidates a single-entry visas, no matter how much time is left on it.
It goes without saying that you can buy a new visa abroad; the OP didn't say his visa was a single-entry one, so I answered he must cancel it, ASSUMING THAT HE HAD A MULTIPLE-ENTRY VISA. If that's not the case, then, yes, I would stand corrected.
But that's why I added the adjective 'concurrent'.
And if you, SPiderman, left China on a multiple-entry visa and bought a new visa abroad I would wonder why you didn't return on the old visa and save the trouble and outlays in purchasing a new visa?
This is, of course, still a transition time with many not quite experienced enough in using their residence permits; they don't specify that you are allowed to exit and reenter China, but let's say to all and sundry: your residence permit takes care of a multiple-entry visa. You can go to Hong Kong or abroad any time, and return so long as your permit is still valid (check the expiry date). |

Roger,
Why do you persist in attributing statements to me that were written by others e.g. that I wouldn't work for less than 150RMb/hour, that I was/am planning on leaving China and the above tripe????
I have never left China on an unexpired multiple entry visa and obtained a new visa abroad, nor have I stated such!
Now, what were you saying about the most number of errant posts?
And, can you actually name people who have put you in the good person category? |

Dear Roger,
Indeed, it was MyTime who made all of these remarks and claims, not Spiderman.

I have a silimlar situation. Finished my contract and have yet to find another position. My Z and FEC expire in 10 days. I'm planning to fly down to HK and app for an F, as I've learned that a Z cannot be changed within the country. Think I'll run into any issues?
Thanks in advance.

Just a thought and if you did did they flat out say no? |

I haven't tried the PSB yet. I was told by another source that it would be a waste of time. I'll have my girlfriend call them tomorrow though. Thanks for the tip.

It's a lot closser than HK and less costly. I'd say don't call but go down there and ask in person - you may get better results. |

Girlfriend and I went to the PSB today. I was told that a 30-day entension on the Visa isn't a problem. I didn't have my release letter from my employer with me, so have to go back to pick up the extension. I'll post the results after.
Thanks again for the tip. |

Sorry I didn't pick up your post earlier.
There is no clear cut answer here...it depends upon the province and the regional PSB.
In Hunan where I am when the teachers' Z visas / resident permits, etc., expire at the end of the term, the local PSB has been rather kind in providing a one-month tourist visa to bridge the gap. In these cases, and there have been many since I have been here, the university has also intervened with the PSB to secure the one-month gap visa...and these teachers were not staying on here but they were going to other jobs in other cities in the new term. This has happened as recently as last January (2006).
In your case, I wouldn't call the PSB. I would go straightforward to see them with the girlfriend and find out what it takes at all and it is possible.
Otherwise you should have no problems with the Hong Kong visa approach if all else fails.
But given the new D visa, and if you plan on staying in China a while, you should do everything possible to have your Z visa extended...I would buy the FAO dinner, drinks, etc., etc., you know the usual..cause if you have 5 years worth of uninterrupted Z visas then you qualify for this wonderful new D visa which will make things a lot easier.
Any questions, PM me.

What happens if you had the residence permit for one year then went to Hong Kong for a holiday and to pick up a new Z visa for a new school, city and province would this be classified as uninterrupted? Also I have heard that you need to invest money/business in China to be considered for this type of visa. I don't think you can just work as an English Teacher for 5 years and then be able to apply for the D visa. Please correct me if I am wrong. |
