There will be celebrations for Chinese New Year in the Barrio Chino in Mexico City. I'm off today on a photo excursion for this...

Mexico City's small barrio chino is on Calle Dolores in Cuauhtmoc borough in the city center. - wikipedia |
This is near several metro stops, including Juarez, Salto del Agua, San Juan de Letran, and Bellas Artes. |

I didn't know that there was a "barrio chino" in Mexico City. I'm planning to ring in (actually "bang" might be a more appropriate verb) the Year of the Dog in Philadelphia's Chinatown; I won't be taking photos, but I'd love to see yours, even if they come out a bit fuzzy from all the firecracker smoke. |

the barrio chino is guy's sick idea of a joke.
actually, there is supposedly a "china town," just south of the alameda. it's laughable. i think it encompasses two blocks and there's nothing there. oh, and there is chinese crap canvassing the entire city anyway so you can get the same effect by shopping at a tianguis near a chinese restaurant (or eating in a chinese retaurant near a tianguis).
i'm looking forward to some photos! |

Well, it certainly is small. 2 blocks is being generous. They had it done up nicely though. Man it was pakced with people!

Thanks for the photos, Guy. It looks like the local Chinese community (and others) have really packed a lot of celebration into those "laughable" two blocks that M@tt mentions. On a related topic, have you ever found a decent Chinese restaurant in Mexico City? |

I've never found a good Chinese restaurant, but I hear Polanco sports one or two. Another Dave's poster out at the celebrations tonight tells me there is a good one near Toluca.
Few of the performers tonight were Chinese. Most looked Mexican or at best mixed Chinese-Mexican. I talked with a couple of Chinese at a restaurant there, but they were from the US. |

Not quite the same, but there's some good Japanese restaurants in the Zona Rosa. I like China Town in Dolores for the grocery stores where you can buy supplies to take home and make gourmet delights! |

Hey all
Im that mysterious "other poster" (out of the closet now!). It was really a decent party for such a small Chinatown. I was pleasantly surprised. Was surprised at the number of people there too, esp. given the fact that there is zero publicity for this event! I nabbed a sign for it and its hanging in my office. Will put up photos on Yahoo and post a link as soon as I can.
Guy, I and three other people were there but it was so crowded we couldnt stay together. I almost lost my boyfriend once or twice!
There is one pretty good Chinese restaurant in Toluca (Metepec). Problem is that Mexico doesnt have a decent-sized Chinese population (except in Baja Norte, so I hear). Many were expelled to China in the late 1800's and I read there is a Chinese-Mexican community in Guangdong. |

You got it did you? I had visions of you being chased out of Chinatown by a pack of sword and halbeard-weilding kickboxers, prize in hand, all to the sound of the Chinese-Latino pop music they had on. |
