Though there are language school teachers who are professional!

Indeed, there are many sincere, hardworking professionals working in these money printing shops: those are the teachers who should be questioning WHY they are still there being paid the same miserable salary as a guy whose puking up all day after 24 hours hitting the pills & chickens Wink

But the social factor is good, if that's what you want; for many it is important as it may be their first time in Indonesia, or maybe their first time overseas. Also, money isn't everything - and I will always spend what I earn reagrdless.

*No, that's not me in the picture, my bike is better Wink There are lots of bikers in Indonesia & they do regular trips out of the city. Biking here in jakarta is a no-no - unless you have a full 'Gulf War HAZMAT suit' Laughing

My point overall points are that there are many types of schools, some are maybe more suitable to some teachers than others. However, there are many types of 'teachers', these may also be more suitable for some schools. It just annoys me when I read posts from some guy whose probably spent his life packing biscuits, getting drunk, beating his wife around some trailer park moaning about the conditions/classes/salary and demanding a top-scale salary/benefits package, having never attended a class (above high school), never read a book and has no understanding of the topic he is supposed to be 'teaching' (not meant to target anyone on here).

Everyone has to start at the bottom (unless you get a lucky break). Learn from this and use it to become a better teacher and to also gain a better understanding of life in Indonesia.

Good luck

Yup! Recruitment for July seems to be in full swing already with many NatPlus and international schools either advertising or interviewing now.

I echo what TP said above - these kind of jobs usually entail responsibilities beyond just teaching English. You may have to attend assembly, admonish miscreants, attend parents' evenings etc just like a regular school-teacher. Many are now offering 2 yr contracts so these jobs are for those who are here medium to long term.

If you can handle all that, and have AT LEAST a 1st degree plus CELTA/TESOL and some experience, then go for it. The very best paid jobs are at international schools but these tend to require a regular school teaching qualification as well.

As TP already said - 'proper' school jobs offer (usually) better pay, hours and holiday entitlement but also expect a lot more from teachers. More people are fired than quit from these jobs, which is quite the reverse situation to the language mills!

With International schools they are after single teachers or teaching couples. A teacher with a non teaching spouse has Buckley's chance!

Not all national plus schools employ trained teachers. Sure they want to. Sure they are professional, but many national plus schools are desperate and some (not all) will employ non trained teachers if they are professional.

And if you like wading through spit and being stared at by zillions of people right in your face, so I'm told, China's the place to be.

Funny how I meet so many teachers in Indo who have 'escaped' from teaching over there.

Ah...I have such fond memories of my 2 years in China Laughing

"The land That Time/Manners/Education/Decency/Personal Cleanliness/Sincerity/Honesty/Basic Human Decency Forgot"

Those universities are lovely and warm in the summer, and refreshingly cool in the winter - not to mention the smell of urine Laughing

The girls with their long long dark flowing hair (under their arms) and beautiful teeth (if you like yellow) - and how I miss the 24/7 hoiiiiiking!!!

Dammit - I do miss Bai Jiu! And the monster sized portions of beef dumplings!

If I were you I'd ask for my money back. The time and money would've been better used if you'd taken a Basic Introduction to Elementary Grammar foundation course.

*Yep - I'd have to agree that EF sucks; that's why I don't work for them.

I did not have to pay for my college course cause it is a scheme to get people on the dole a job.

We learnt to write well and if we send some official thing we learnt to use Word and check for all the problems. Read it carefully

Like I am just banging this out quick in the library.

Gotta hit the water now

Thanx for your thoughts
