| ....is definitely the most misspelled word on these boards. Why do so many people seem to think it has an "a" in it? |

Fossilization...? As 'native' speakers we're never corrected, until we become EFL teachers that is; it happened the other day, I just could not remember how to spell 'scalpel'... whether because I've never written it before I'm not sure... luckily there was a 12 year old Korean with one of those translator things on hand... |

I buy my students an ice cream every time I mispell a word on the board and they catch it. This keeps them on their toes, and me too (or is that to?).
Anyway, it works and they do get some free ice cream every once in a while. I make sure of that so they do not lose interest. |

THANK YOU! It really annoys me that people *definitely* don't care about spelling!
It's a huge pet-peeve of mine. It really disturbs me when teachers do not take the time to proofread their writing.
I spend a lot of time on Teachers.net - not nearly as much spelling lunacy over there.
Not to be highbrow, or anything... |

Sorry Gerard, but misspelled is also often misspelled, as you have shown.
Cobra, can I have an ice-cream? |

Then there's the whole British/Canadian/American spelling issue (and let's not get into the pronunciation debate!) -- i usually like to use (in my personal life, not when teaching) the old British spellings.
'organisation' is my favourite, because most people think it is incorrect, but it isn't, it's just old school.
just as calculators made learning one's times tables unnecessary, so is the computer to needing to learn how to spell correctly.
soon we will all be writing that short-form computer messenger language and we'll the redundant ones!

I see a lot of misuse of their/there/they're, it's/its, and your/you're on message boards, not just this one (but we should probably know better on this one ). The misuse of affect/effect is another one that gets to me. The other day, I read a post from someone who repeatedly asked for "imput" with an m.
As for British/American spellings, as a Canadian I tend to go with the British spellings (although I teach my students both). Examples: colour, favour, neighbour, harbour, cheque, racquet, centre, metre, litre, grey, etc.

I still regard the ability to spell as the litmus test. If you can you are educated. if you can't then you are an illiterate and should not be standing in front of a group of language learners.

Threeeee cheers for the old school, I'm with you there, Scot; two cheers for British speling, and one enormous cheer for CG for cheering us up with her avatar good looks!
Er, where was i..
oh yes... disinterest and uninterest, or lack of interest. People often say disinterest (impartiality) when they mean uninterest... But you may not even be intereseteds.
Just one of my peeves-- i used to edit stuff, though you would never know it. Anyway, don't get me started on the subject of malapropismus
Ave a nice day. |

Have to agree with Steiner. Grammar is almost always misspelled as grammer here. (rolling my eyes)
Other words I see misspelled include
your/you're
there/their/they're
dependent (as dependant)
visa (as VISA or Visa)
whose/who's
wonder/wander
Whether someone uses N.American or British spelling is irrelevant to me. They are both correct.
The occasional typo should be accepted here, but obvious spelling mistakes raise a red flag.
"Your going to see people who's spelling is bad hear, and there dependant on a spell checker, which makes you wander how they'll get they're Visa from immigration." |

Well, a lot of them are not really teachers in the first place, so what can you expect? |

Come on, now--haven't you heard that there's a spelling gene? Some people just aren't genetically predisposed to spell things correctly. Let's not blame the victims!
d
FYI--Spelling errors (except for the occasional permissible typo) annoy me a great deal. |
