If you have the right card you can get between 5-10 % of on everything at Migros. (Kofamily card is the best)

Has anyone ever tried haggling in Sok or Dia or Migros?

No, but my father-in-law tries to haggle in McDonalds, with not much success.

My mother-in-law is a champ-- she doesn't even haggle, she just says 'I'll pay xx,' then hands over xx and that's the end of the discussion.

A comment on cultural sensitivity made in response to my ınıtıal post was well taken. I removed a word used untimely.

Turkish people are extremely friendly and eager to please . . . (see new post)

i've been lucky enough to live in a small village and travel extensively throughout Turkey. I wouldn't say that the people in Istanbul are any less friendlier than small villages. Maybe people in a small village are more curious. I have lived in many neighbourhoods in Istanbul- all of them friendly(even Cihangir)

shame on me... I'm not a native speaker, so you guys can forgive my spelling mistakes, right? Smile I guess I had never seen the word "craziness" written before...
As for the "extremely friendly and eager to please people, more so in towns and villages" and "people wanting to practice their English" wait until you've had enough of that...
Don't think I don't like Turkey or Turkish people, I do, but sometimes, everything is just too much...

You're right on about that, ebeneezer-- good days and bad. Some days I'm delighted with how friendly and happy and hospitable everyone seems. Other days I just want everyone to shut the f*** up and let me get my own cup of coffee or open my own napkin. Comes with getting used to a place, I suppose. In Oregon I had days where I was delighted with all the organic heirloom produce and happy farmers and interesting bead and hemp-wear, other days I considered turning Republican just so I wouldn't have to participate in another 'victims of the world' conversation, or hold my breath just to sit next to a hippie.

And I'm completely fed up with people who think foreigners are happy to drop everything and practice English with them. I've had people come sit at my table in a restaurant for this! It's not easy to make them go away! Like hippies!

Past hippiness is forgiveable... It's the current ones that get to me...
What's weird is that I haven't actually seen a hippie in almost a year and they still get me all riled up.

Number one gripe. I'm trying to frickin' eat.
The worst one was the guy who came up to me started talking to me then had a go at me for not learning Turkish.

'You foriegners come here and you think we all should speak English, why not you know Turkish?'

'Abi, Turke biliyorumi ama siz inglize konuşyordunuz."

that learnt him..

probably.
