I keep reading differing reports on the conditions in Panama. Can anyone tell me with certainty what they are getting paid there?
I've read between $15-$20 in some threads and as low as $5 on others.
I guess it differs with the qualifications.

I'd appreciate if anyone could give me a definitive answer.

Cheers
Paul

Hi,

It depends on two factors:

1) your qualifications.
2) where you work.

Of course, your qualifications will determine where you work so it really on depends on the first one. If you are a bona fide teacher you can get a job at one of the Universities making between $15-20 USD/hr. If you are a backpacker type looking to finance your sojourn across the isthmus you will be relegated to the language schools making between $5-10 USD/hr. Though I can't Imagine why anyone would accept $5 USD here, PTY is way too expensive to live on that!

I agree with my friend and colleague kingkristopher. The $$$ can be VERY good...depending where you work, of course. If you're backpacking you'll find slim pickings. You have a chance at a much better job if you're established here. $15/$20 is about right.
The sticky part these days is having a work permit. There may be an exception or two, but most places now require your plastic work permit card from the Ministerio de Trabajo. It's a long procedure with lawyers and tons of paperwork...and money. If one is prepared for this, it's a fun place to be! Cool

I'd love to know which universities those are... even Florida State University-Panama doesn't pay that well.
