Embarassed I need a goof monitor for my typing.

I meant "good" monitoring...but I can see how it still fits.

I've seen only one guy get fired outright. It was after only two weeks, and it was because he was just plain terrible. He was a grumpy old fart ex-pat who probably shouldn't have been hired in the first place.

Other reasons:
- one co-worker was let go at the end of his contract (not the same as being fired, I realize) for being argumentative and extremely difficult to work with.
- another was "let go" for being rude to his students.

If your DOS has a girlfriend/wife, you could:

mouth off to her

sleep with her

talk about him behind his back

or all three.

Another "trick" is to let students out of class 45 minutes early because you've "Taught all they needed to know for tonight." I knew a guy who was fired for doing this.

It still seems that it is impossible to get fired for teaching poorly. Even if you are a poor teacher and smile and don't sleep with anyone you won't get fired.

I guess that good hiring practices can help avoid the hiring of those who really can't teach, but if you accidentally get one, I still feel that fairness to the teacher means offering opportunities and feedback to help that person improve.

If someone is unwilling to make this effort, then it's time to show him or her the door. Most frequently, I've seen this done through the "starvation" technique- where a teacher simply isn't given enough hours to survive. Then they tend to leave on their own, without the fuss of having to fire them.

Regards,
Justin

Failing students does the trick. So does being hard on them, translated in Korea as being "mean." Basically, students are customers and whitey is the product. Being of the wrong look, religion, accent, etc. are all good ways of getting canned. As last resort, I recommend melatonin shots.

Being in 'Asia', couldn't one just spend a month in bed smoking opium and complaining of having 'no power'? Once the tiger pen1s and monkey rectum soup is seen to have no effect, what alternative is there to letting you go?

Quote:
great-big globs of greasy-grimey gopher guts, mutilated monkey meat, itty-bitty birdy feet, all wrapped up and drenched in blood, and me without a spoon

From days of yore (scout's honour!), I recall this particular little ditty as:

"Great green globs of greasy, grimey gopher guts, mangle-ated monkey nuts, filthy dirty bird seed. French-fried eyeballs rolled in a pool of blood, and I forgot my spoon."

Hmm. A colleague of mine was fired a couple of years back at a private school for being ill too often. (dunno how often that was btw).
We were all quite suprised, cuz we didn't think it was possible either...

However, I think it was because at the time there was a whole bunch of teachers working there and student numbers declined, so the DOS needed to ditch a teacher. He just took the first opportunity when someone reported in sick.

So, I suppose one way to get fired is to get your own (better) replacement teacher, or a whole bunch of em, and stay in bed the whole time calling in sick.

Doing a whole lessonseries on Taiwan or the Dalai Lama might do the trick too. Though you run the risk of being sent to a rehabilitation centre in Gansu somewhere.

I imagine drop-kicking the school owner in the 'nads would work.
Of course, that might also get you thrown in jail, but hey, there's a price for everything.

I don't know if that would get you fired. I have heard of some eccentric behavior in Korea that did not lead to firing.

Being mad in TEFL won't get you fired...you'll probably get moved sideways to Materials writing or promoted to DOS...!
You have to be mad and bad to get fired.....insultingly, offensively bad!!
