I know this doesnt seem immediately relevant, but it is to me, so please bear with me. Smile

Im in the process of figuring out if i can claim Italian citizenship via ancestry (partially so i can look for teaching work there), and I've run into a situation which isn't covered in anything I've looked up so far. I know some of you have done this research as well, and I would be very grateful for the advice.

If my great-grandfather came to the US, and brought over my grandfather as a child, but did NOT become a U.S. citizen before he died...am I correct in thinking that my grandfather remained an Italian citizen until he himself was naturalised as an adult?

And in that vein, what was the legal age of adulthood at the turn of the 20th century? (today, one is considered no longer a minor at age 18...would that have been the same back then?)

For instance, if my great-grandfather brought my grandfather to the US as a child, but my grandfather reached the legal age of adulthood BEFORE my great-grandfather became naturalised, would he still have been automatically naturalised along with his father, or would he have had to apply on his own, since he would be considered an adult, not a dependent child?

Aspasia,

I believe your grandfather would not have been naturalized because he wasn't a minor. Therefore, you should be entitled to citizenship via Jure Sanguinis. Though I am not 100% sure.

Here are some websites with good forums for discussing citizenship questions:

www.expatsinitaly.com,
