I sent a box about 12x12x12 inches to Brazil three weeks ago. My friends I was sending it to there told me today that the post man told them they had to pay some federal tax of R$206 (US $82) to take the package.
What is this?? I don't understand why they're charging so much. It's almost as much as the contents is worth. I'm not very happy about this and my friends in Brazil don't have enough money to pay this fee. The postman said if they don't pay it, the box gets sent back to me.
Is this normal? There must be some mistake here. What are these so-called taxes for? It's really unjustified. |

Did you claim a price of the contents on the coustom sheet on/in the package?
I'm not sure about Brazil, but in Argentina I had to pay 30-50% of the portion the sender claimed the package was worth. When sending things from the US, it is common to over state the price of the contents for insurence purposes.... BUT they look at that at the post office and determine how much you have to pay.
I have a friend whose parents sent her malaria pills while in Argentina and they claimed the package was worth $250 and they tried to charge her $100 upon claiming it. She denied it, they sent it pack to her parents, the parents resent it and the second time they sent it they said the contents were worth $10 and she just had to pay $3 upon receiving it.
So... I think what they are telling them is legit.... though it sucks. I guess I would have them ask the post office worker how they figured out the price and possibly say it is something cheap inside.... though they may have to open it in front of people there. |

This happens in Mexico too, where one might have to pay duty on certain good shipped down, or a bribe if customs feels like asking for one. |

I will them what you suggested. I even told my friends to have the postman contact me and I can tell them how much it's really worth (though I'm doubtful they will go through such trouble). The worst thing is that if they do pay the tax, it's not much of a gift anymore. |
