I don`t mean to be a whiner, but I have to vent. Why is it every Latin American company/university/institute/non-profit, almost anyone with a webpage, have faulty email addresses? I just got the umpteenth bounce back when I tried to email the Universidad de Puebla. Does nobody on the continent(s) update the email accounts they post? Im no technical genius by any means, but if I was going to create a website, I would at least make sure the bloody email addresses I posted could receive messages. Even the webmaster`s address, which it says can be used to report problems on the website, even that one bounced back! Evil or Very Mad

What did the Puebla bounce message say? Maybe their servers are down temporarily and will work again at a later time. (I'm an ex-IT bod)

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mx01.siu.buap.mx.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<[email protected]>:
Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. vpopmail (#5.1.1)

If you`re curious, the website is www. buap.mx

Ok, so the servers are working, since that's where the message came from. You can tell this because its got the buap.mx domain on the end. It means that whoever designed the website made a booboo with the link for the email address.

Instead of using the webmaster address on the home page by typing it into your emails software, try clicking on the words. It is actually a form, which you can fill out, and try to sneak in sideways.

Good luck!

I've just tested an email address that Tortuga sent me, and its all working for me. Interestingly, another poster mentioned having trouble getting through to a Puebla email address yesterday, so maybe there was a problem with some connections there. All looks to be ok now tho! Email away! Laughing

There was a major computer virus that was due to strike yesterday, I think I heard. Could be the problem?

That would be it! Viruses that use mail out thingies to spread themselves crash mail servers and cause general havoc...

Yeah, it sounds like they've had a virus tear through their system. These things usually take a day or two to be ironed out, so, like all good things, I suggest you leave it until Monday..

Have a good weekend,
Lozwich.

I should hope not! Laughing

However, most bounce messages have a reason listed (even if it is in stupid IT speak). When they say its a permanent error, often it means "permanent until fixed". Sometimes, when you can't reach a page (like here when it says can't connect to database) its only temporary and usually because of high traffic. Ones that you should completely give up on are ones where the message says the user does not exist or something like that. All the others mean that the user is there, they just have a problem.

It's not you, it's them! Laughing

Have a great day,
Lozwich.
