now that i have your attention...
i just need to vent for a bit, and warn any newcomers to this country. plan to get MOD EDIT by people you consider your friends. today for the--hmmm, let me think here, maybe the 7th time? 8th? i can't even keep track--- i was once again ripped off by someone who i thougth i was fairly close friends with from veracruz, bringing my grand total to about 20,000 pesos in 9 months.
the majority of mexicans--yes, the majority, ask a mexican if you think i'm being unfair-- have no problem with stealing and cheating you, including people you live with, your students, your significant other, your best friends, etc etc etc. the country has some wonderful things going for it but integrity is at the bottom of the list. be careful who you trust, if you decide to trust anyone.
--pissed off and poorer in DF (although it's really veracruz that i hate)
p.s. yes, there are wonderful mexicans too. good luck finding them.
p.p.s. i self edited the first line but apparently the imagery was too strong for the mod. it included the phrase "bent over."

More details if you can m@tt. My wife (a Mexican from DF) and I are planning to move to DF late this year or whenever our house sells, and I would like to know what to look for.
Did someone say they would pay you for some conversation lessons and then didn't?
I'm hoping a school didn't screw you over.

The only time I've been ripped off in Mexico, the culprit was a foreigner. (French, BTW)
I could post a note that says "I hate (most) Frenchmen", but I don't think that'd be very fair. |

I have days in DF where the thought 'I hate Mexicans' crosses my mind. Usually traffic-related or when suffering through the maana phenomenon. |

sorry for my outburst. i've been in a pretty bad mood all day, as this particular episode has just brought to mind a string of past episodes.
thanks for the sympathy, YanquiQuilmeo.

no, it wasn't a school. that happened to about one third of my co-workers, though, who were mass-fired a year ago for political reasons.
the point of my posting was that you will get screwed by people you know. that's why it is disturbing. watch our for people you trust (an oxymoron, i realize, which is why i'm feeling so frustrated right now).

congratulations on beating the odds. i hope you don't get ripped off again, by anyone. however, this post has nothing to do with france, and you were ripped off once. i lived in france for a year and never had problems, and i'm pretty sure i met more french people there than you did in mexico. furthermore, dishonesty is not a core ingredient of french culture the way it is in mexico. my opinion is 100% based on personal experience and commentaries from mexican friends, many of whom attribute it to the way the spanish treated the natives while they were colonizing the country. awhile ago i started asking people if they thought this kind of thing would get better over time and every one of them told me it will stay the same or get worse. essentially, that it is such a core part of the culture it will never go away.
fortunately, there are some wonderful things about being here too. i'm not planning on leaving for at least a week. i was thinking about requiring a security deposit in exchange for friendship though. or does anyone think a fiador would work better? |

Matt, Thats the stupidest thing Ive heard in a long time. Just because you cant judge character dont indict an entire country. You must have Theres a sucker born every day written on your face. I am certain that there are the same kind of people in big cities all over the world. I have had people here give me everything. I have been scolded for not coming to eat 3 meals a day with people. One family gave me their little house to sleep in while they slept outside. I lived in a little town that was 100 years behind the times. I didnt lock my house and could wander around in the wee hours without probs. I hiked the backwoods of the Yucatan alone for days. Try that in Guatamala or Honduras, or even Texas for that matter. Try choosing your business? partners better. If you want to vent your frustrations, get professional help. This forum is for free speech, and Im all for it, but your juvenile remarks did offend me. How can you be so dumb as to blame others for your shortcomings? Grow up and realize that your mommy isnt here to protect you. Leave your money in the bank, shitforbrains! cwc |

M@tt,
I hear your frustration,
Once I went to a bar in Pachuca with a bunch of locals where the waiter was very slow, so I would go to the bar to buy beers. I wound up buying aBOUT 6 beers at the bar and I decided to leave before everyone else did. What wound up happening is that the waiter saw the beer bottles on our table and added them to the tap, double billing the table. When the check came my Mexican friends thought I charged all the beers to the tap and left without paying, screwing them. The idiot staff at this place called Freedom(don't ever go) made the people at the table pay for the beers I had already paid for. I heard later that this made quite a few Mexicans that were at my table want to watch out for Gringos trying to drink for free.
what's my point? ireally don't know, but I lived in Pachuca for better than 16 months and that was the only time I got ripped off, and I wasn't even the one who got ripped off!
Mexico City is a big ass city with 30 million people in it! You would probably have the similar problems in New Youk or Los Angeles!
Stick to the smaller towns brother!
MExico is alright !
I respect you for having the courage to try out ol DF! |

In my former days as a counselor / therapist with troubled youth in America I'd often encounter a teen who had fallen head over heals in love or who had a new friend who they really liked a lot. I would caution them to build relationships slowly allowing time for the trust to grow. I came up with this little excercise to help them better decide who they should and should not trust.
Step 1: Choose a person in your life and think ( as objectively as you can ) how much you KNOW ABOUT that person. Give them a score on a scale of 1 - 10, 1 being almost a total stranger and 10 being you know ABSOLUTLEY AND COMPLETELY EVERYTHING about that person.
Step 2: With the same person in mind and using the same scale, give them a score based on HOW WELL YOU KNOW THAT PERSON THROUGH EXPERIENCING LIFE WITH THEM.
Lets say you are 14 and you have a new girlfriend or boyfriend you've been together maybe 6 months, in step 1 you might give that person a score of 6 and in step 2 a score of 3; For a combined score of 9.
Step 3: Now take the scores from step 1 and 2 and add them together. On a "TRUST SCALE" OF 1 - 20. 1 being don't trust that person with anything and 20 being trust that person with everything, your heart and soul, your life and all your secrets and money and everything imaginable.
If the client was truely objective the score would be a great insight into how easily they place their trust in others when they should be more cautious and guard their hearts.
Many, in fact most of my clients had at some point in their lives been abused either physically or sexually, both boys and girls so knowing how and when and how far to trust others was a major issue for them and an important skill for them to develop. |

right... ???
i changed the title of this post because it was indeed much too flamey. i don't really hate mexicans, i'm just tired of certain repeated bad experiences. just for the record, all them happened in veracruz city or fortin, a village of 15,000 people in veracruz state where i lived for a year. so, the comments about big cities are totally irrelevant, and the people i've met in DF have actually been better than those in veracruz. i haven't been ripped off here at all apart from being pickpocketed in the metro.
also clearly my fault, by the way, as all of these experiences were brought on by my own shortcomings and bad choice of "business?" partners.
again, i'm extremely happy for anyone who has had good experiences here (as i have also had). apart from the original title of this thread, i haven't changed my mind about the rest of what i wrote. i will have to be proven wrong by mexicans, and would be really happy if that happened. until then, will just take a different approach to all relationships. my bland advice to newcomers is basically to hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. |

Okay, M@tt and everyone. Let's get a grip. M@tt needed to vent. Obviously those of us who have been reading the board for years now, know that M@tt has choosen to come back to Mexico. Obviously he likes living here (or there is that possiblity that he has mental problems ) but just like any of us, he needs to let off steam once in a while. When you spend most of your time with Mexicans, its not a good idea to say to one of them. "I HATE THESE FUNKING PEOPLE!", so you have to say it to someone who is also not one of them. Right? So let's let him have this vent. If it becomes a weekly thing, than we can start advising him to make some major changes in his life. OK? |
