Are there a lot of schools that offer training to teachers who have none in exchange for teaching at the school for a year or so? I'm planning on taking a certification course this summer, but before I do that, I was wondering how many schools will do it for me. I realize there will likely still be a cost involved. I read that International House in Turkey offers to train their teachers. Are there a lot of schools like that? Obviously I'm looking for schools that offer a certification that is accepted in other countries. Is this even a good idea, or should I just stick with my plan to take a Bridge-Linguatec course this summer?

This is rather oddly worded, if you don't mind me saying so. Nobody gives you training IN EXCHANGE FOR work. If an employer provides training is IN PREPARATION FOR work.

Training in Japan, whenever it is offered, is usually very specific to the teaching format that the school wishes to use. So, you may not be able to use it elsewhere. If you have no previous teaching experience or training, and you think you'll be in this game for more than a year, getting TESL/TEFL certification may be worth your time and money.

Yes. As you mentioned, some chain schools offer free/subsidized training courses in exchange for agreeing to sign a one-year contract to teach at one of their schools.
I don't know about International House, but English First is one such chain.

Take care, as there are schools (Berlitz and others) who offer training in their specific methods only. This is fine so long as you are happy to work in that chain only, but just try taking your Berlitz credentials to more progressive schools (as one example).

Harmon Hall in Mexico does this too, with a mandatory 4 week training session, that may or may not result in employment.
