A friend's daughter, 21, BA in Linguistics, CELTA, no teaching experience, has been offer a job , with another graduate similarly qualified, to start a language school in Qatar. The person who made the offer is not a Qatari and is based in London. Does this seem likely? I teach in the Gulf but have no experience of Qatar, however, I don't think the regulations regarding schools, work permits, etc. can be very different.
Opinions, please. Thanks. |

Afra,
From these facts I would definitely tell my friend to try to stop her daughter from getting involved - anywhere in the world actually. Some stranger is starting a new school and wants two young inexperienced 21 year olds???
I would run as fast as possible in the opposite direction.

Alarm bells go off when I look at this !
If she wants to work in the Gulf better to try something else, but most M/E employers want people with a minimum of 2 or 3 years' experience.

I agree but my friend isn't convinced so I'm looking for information about the legal aspects of starting a school in Qatar, especially with inexperienced teachers. |

FEMALE ? Foreigner ? Aged 21. No experience in teaching or in the Middle East ?
THINK AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I would forget about the "legal" aspect. What do you (or any of us)know about the Qatari legal system ?
Leave it to the locals. |

Hi Afra,
I'm not all that sure about finding out the legal aspects of opening a school here in the US, no less figuring out doing it in a Gulf country.
All I know is that you NEVER hear anything good about these fly-by-night language schools that are starting up all over the Gulf. I spend most of my time retired here in the US helping people find jobs in this area and my advice to these people, many of whom have experience, is to avoid these new places.
The Gulf is not the place for 21 year old females with no experience and any mother who would consider encouraging her daughter to go there under these circumstances would not be doing these girls a favor.
I hope you are able to convince these people to stay away from this type of organization.
