[quote]1. How do many Japanese view Koreans today?
Quote:

Loaded question, since the represent one of the major group of foreigners born in Japan and not given citizenship. Many Koreans hide their identity by changing their names to Japanese ones.

Also, you have to clarify whether you mean SOUTH or NORTH Koreans, if you refer to the people NOT born in Japan. North Koreans are feared and generally thought to be crazy volatile warlike people. South Koreans are generally liked/accepted.

2. How do Japanese view foreigners, especially from the US?

That is a whole can of worms. America is what Japan likes to copy in many cases. However, what people think of Americans depends on who you ask and who you talk about (the general public vs. GW Bush, for example). It also depends on what part of Japan you are in. Those near military bases have stronger dislikes.

3. How do Japanese treat heavy-set people? I know its still Asia, but it HAS to be better than what I have been party to by Koreans!

Don't worrry about this one.

4. Are health clubs in Japan generally welcoming to foreigners?

Yes.

5. How do Japanese men behave in locker/shower rooms? In Korea, I'd often have a man (or 2) pinching my stomach and laughing while changing clothes. Are Japanese more reserved?

No direct experience with this situation, but my friends tell me you won't have a problem.

Is there anything I'm missing here?

Yes, but there is just SO MUCH to ask, that I can't give you specific answers unless you ask specific questions. A GENERAL reply would be to say that IN GENERAL you will find Japanese people less xenophobic and more accepting (on the outside anyway).

Wow, sounds like you had a nasty experience in Korea. A lot of people seem to have a rough time in the ROK, but I know some folks who enjoyed their time there. I guess it all depends.

Anyway, as for your questions, I don't think you'll have the same problems in Japan so I wouldn't worry about it.

Some older Japanese don't like Korea much, and in my experience the average middle-aged salaryman (when drunk) will admit to not liking Korea much.

But, among the young, I don't think there are any problems. You might just find that the average Japanese is a little uninformed about why there's so much anti-Japanese sentiment in Korea. It's not uncommon to meet Japanese who have no idea that Japan used to occupy Korea.

Health clubs, no problem. I've barely even been spoken to, let alone poked/pinched/prodded in any way. Japanese tend to be way more reserved than Koreans (at least with strangers).

Heavy-set (other than comments "can you find your size in Japan?") no problem. Japanese are very up front about body image issues, but it's not usually done in a mean-spirited way.

Basically, I wouldn't expect any of the problems that people generally complain about in Korea.
