Hi

I've just been offered a teaching post in Mersin at the Mersin Merchant Marine Academy. Has anyone worked for this institution before? Any advice /info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello:

This is what happened, in September 2005, MMMA approached me for a job offer. I filled out all the required forms, sent them my resume. We kept sending emails to and fro and then suddenly they never followed up. I looked them up on the web and they seem to be legit but thats all the information I can really offer you bcoz I ended up not working for them.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If this does pan out for you, I would really like to hear all about the job.

Good luck

Hi, I am working at MMMA and I have been for three months. I apologise for not organising a reply to this post sooner. I am quite happy here, however it has taken some adjustment. I think before coming here you need to be aware of some of the details.

The rules and regulations are strict. I work 7:30am-6pm, although only 6 classes from 8am-3. Leaving school early or coming late (even one minute) incurs a late fine which will be deducted from your salary.

They ask to take your passport then are reluctant to provide support in arranging visas-permits. I have had a battle for refusing to hand over my passport. I did get help arranging my permit but they told me i was an exception.

I am happy here because the students are wonderful, my co-teacher is awesome and Mersin is a great city.

They promise a lot, but then cannot even provide board-markers and forget trying to arrange worksheets...paper is in short supply. There have also been many problems with the accomodation, but slowly these are being resolved. We have hot water now...thank god, it has been a cold winter.

I am not surprised to hear that they did not reply to an application as the lack of organisation is sometimes frightening. I often don't know what I am doing untill seconds before. You also learn to stop asking questions....the reply is never satisfactory.

I would take some serious consideration before agreeing to come here. It is not always easy or pleasent. Although the insanıty of this place is often entertaining and there is always some sort of drama to keep you amused. I will not be returning after this semester, although I am happy to see this position through untill the end of my contract.

I would also make sure that you keep copies of all your communication with them and keep track of what they promise...it will definitely come in handy.

Finally it is semester break at the moment, no students, yet i must be at school....with nothing to do, all day, everyday! (three weeks!!) I dıdn't bother to ask why....

I hope this sheds some useful light on the mystery that is MMMA!

good luck

Does this this really outwiegh all the negative things you mention? You'll find wonderful students all over Turkey, you'll find awesome co-teachers elsewhere and there are greater cities than Mersin in Turkey. What keeps you there? must be a great package.(salary/benefits etc)

the lady sent me a letter saying i sent in the information too late. I thought something was up, when I asked to be able to contact a current foreign teacher as reference. She said it was NOT POSSIBLE, and any contact will be through her.

Taking your passport is a big NO NO, i'm glad you got out of that rule. I read on another teaching board about the problems with teaching there also.

The truth be told I am not sure! The salary is low and the benefits thus far are non-existent. However my contract ends in June, and that's not so far away. I am always looking for other options, but while I am here I am trying to enjoy the maddness of MMMA and the company of my friends here in this crazy town... also it is warmer here. The sun is often shining. Although not today.

that's all.

Brilliant indeed but 'Night Boat to Cairo' is still my favorite.
