I'm in discussions with a company calling itself "We Love China," regarding a teaching position in Shenyang. Anyone out there have any experience with either "We Love China," or Shenyang that he or she would be willing to share? This would be my initial foray into teaching and I'd like for it to be as positive as possible. Thanks.

Rachel

I don't know the school but I've taught in Shenyang 2-3 years. Obviously I enjoy the place or I wouldn't have signed further contracts.

7 million or so people.

Cold and dry in the winter.
Heavy rains in spring.
Humid in summer.
Autumn is glorious.

Initial capital of the last dynasty, Qing, before they moved to Beijing. There is a lot of interesting history. Some nice parks too.

Lots of shopping options. Some western foods like cheese are available in a few large western chain stores like Carrefour and Metro.

Feel free to pm me for any specific info on the city.

Cold, yes. Dry, definitely not as compared to Dalian and Hohhot. Very Happy

I spent only 2 weeks in Shenyang, in 2004. I thought it was a dirty, polluted, disorganised, spread out city that was bitterly cold (and rained nearly everyday), even in September.

Thanks so much, all of you, for your kind and helpful responses. But I don't think that I'm going to be offered the job, so I'll just chalk it up to experience and go to Cambodia instead.

Cheers!

Spiderman is right in that it is dirty, polluted spread out etc. - although my experience of Sept 2004 was not cold at all. However, Shenyang is not a bad place to live at all. There is plenty to do there - as long as you are based in the central Heping District - and an active, generally young, expatriate community which takes place at several nice-ish bars. Of course, if you're looking for hundreds of bars and excitement every day or night, go to Beijing or Shanghai. Otherwise, Shenyang is perfectly fine. And, yes, you can get enough Western comforts to make things more than bearable.

I would thoroughly recommend it in opposition to, say, Yiwu, which is a shitty little city in Zhejiang whose only saving graces are proximity to Hangzhou and Shanghai. If anyone is thinking of going to Yiwu, particularly EF Yiwu, then my advice is DON'T.
