Hello folks,
I would love to get in touch with black or non-white people who have been teaching EFL, especially in China. I'm very curious about your experiences.
Regards,

Hi Will,
Not much luck, eh? In my vast experience here in Japan I met and worked with one person of color. We taught together at a university and he has since returned to the States to attend medical school. If you like, I could refer him to your thread. Let me know.
Good luck,

There are certainly more non-white, non-blue-eyed, non-blond folks out teaching EFL nowadays.
Ever so slowly the non-English speaking world, Asia in particular, is realizing that not all skilled English speakers meet their standard stereotype. And, in their search for good teachers, seem to have widened the net considerably.
While in a small town in Korea for a couple years recently - we had Chinese Canadian, Black-Americans, Hispanic Americans - and just about every hypenated thing you could find - even - how would say in a PC way - Calorically challenged, gravity-challenged, senility-challenged (me!) and much much more.
I don't suspect it would be easy - but I do think it is out there for you.
You might find it easier to job hunt in person where people could meet you and see that you are a decent person. Some parts of the world, again Asia in particular, are very personal-contact oriented. They draw mush more from first impressions than Western culture does/would.
Good luck! |
