I have received a lot of feedback from schools complaining that it takes longer this year than in the past to get the paperwork done for incoming teachers because the work that used to done by the foreign affairs office at the local government level is being taken over by the branches of the administration of foreign experts affairs and footdragging, power struggle, handpushing inevitably happened in the course.
I am wondering what the situation is like in other countries. |

My first work permit in Thailand, from go to whoa, took 4 months. And in Thailand you definitely contact change a tourist visa to a 'B' business visa. So for teachers arriving on a tourist visa that time, and cost, is even more. |

Could it be a worldwide post-9/11 pattern? In the United States, the formation of the Department of Homeland Security brings many formerly separate government agencies under one umbrella. As a result, bureaucrats often find themselves performing unfamiliar tasks. The natural tendency of an uncertain bureaucrat is to delay and double-check, so backlogs for visa processing have grown. |
