I've read both minor and major problems encountered. My question is that when someone really feels a school is doing them wrong, why don't they leave. Is it because they don't want to miss out on a bonus or airfare reimbursement? Is because they will be caught by the school as they try to leave in the middle or the night? Or will they not be able to board a plane?

Not everything is earth shattering, but to those who believe it is I can't understand why they stay.

Yes, yes and yes!
And if you like China but don't like your job, its usually better to tough it out, put it down to experience and move on.
Not that people don't do moonlight flits and move on as well.

A lot of posters here would like to be treated fairly. Running is the last option. I don't advocate it - only when you are getting screwed - which a lot of us are.

As there is no guarantee the next school in China would be better.

Sometimes it can be a matter of finances. If you are only making 3500 to 4000 a month and you like to go out and shop and dine and club hop, then that money can sift through your fingers fairly quickly. If you have a bill or two back home that you have to pay, there goes a chunk of that change as well. Good advice is to try and put away 25% of your salary every month as savings . . . just in case. Otherwise, you may have empty pockets and may have to stay at a job you don't like (and I'm not advising doing a runner, just responding to the question asked).

Some say they have not been paid and they school tells them there is no money or something. Yet they stay. Some imply some really bad screwing over money-wise. I don't know what it would take for me to leave a place, but I haven't experienced some of the things mentioned on this forum.

The fact that the contract keeps being brought up implies some serious infractions.

Personally I view the contract like the traffic lights...just a suggestion.

Why not do a runner when a schools bad?

Simple...Visa and Residence Permit issues.

This ain't the southwest US and we ain't illegal mexican migrants who can just disappear into the LA barrio. There ain't no gringo barrrio for a foreign teacher just to disappear into til he gets a new illegal job.

What I was asking PB was if someone feels a school is sooo bad and they have been cheated out of money, why don't they go back to the country they came from.

Are you saying that the visa and residency permits prohibit them from obtaining a flight to their home?

This has been said by many an idiot on these forums. Everybody has a right to be treated properly. Everybody has a right to stay in China for whatever reason and not being chased home by all the lying and cheating. Stop making stupid comments!

No need to go home. China is most certainly not the only country on the planet where you can teach English. English teachers can and do choose to go and teach somewhere else if they are unsatisfied either in China or elsewhere.

Also, it seems that China is big enough [huge] that going to another school in another province or region is a potentially good option as well.

I am at a school where the contract is not followed. Another teacher and I have been discussing whether the situation is bad enough to go home. We feel a little differently about it.

With regards to going home (to each his own) we brought up the idea that perhaps you would get caught at the airport or that without a release letter from your employer you could not get another job.

Perhaps this additional information will provide needed clairity to avoid anymore of the unnecessarily caustic comments.

Our discussion is about what could happen by departing if she doesn't stick it out.

There are all kinds of rumours of blacklists etc. That's all it is - rumours. Get on with your life. Find a new job. There are 100's. Sorry to slag you off. Thought you are one of the idiots posting on this site. Good luck!

They will then put you in prison and throw away the key.

Get real, they can't and will not stop you from getting on the plane if you haven't finished your contract. Contracts here aren't worth the paper they are printed on.
