I want my boyfriend to come to Japan with me. I am going to Japan with the ECC group. I was advised by the human resources director to come to Japan as seeminly independent. I was wondering if anyone knew how I can get my boyfriend to come to Japan and be able to stay there.
He has an associates degree. He doesn't want to teach English. We are willing to get married if that is what it takes to keep him there.
Also, he has a sleeve of tattoos. I've heard from Japanese students that this is the signature mark of a gang member.
If anyone has any advice for me, please, don't hesitate to write.

Associate degree suggests that he is American. That means he can't get a working holiday visa or a work visa.

He can't stay longer than 90 days at a time as a tourist, and immigration will get suspicious if he keeps leaving and returning just to stay with you.

So, you will have to get married and get him a dependent visa if he plans to stay.

If he doesn't plan to teach, just how do the two of you expect to live on your ECC salary? You won't be able to. If he gets the dependent visa, he can file for permission to work, too, and be able to do some PT work, but that's all. Plus, having only an associate degree will not make him very good material for any employer. He might get bartending work, but he'll still have to know some Japanese even for that.

Hey, Thank you for the helpful advice. Don't worry about the money part. He has a lot of money saved up (he's very frugal). Should we wait until we go to Japan to get married, or should we do it before hand? The human resources director of ECC said that the Japanese Embassy frowns apon couples who come over. I guess that means that the ECC people don't want to accomodate him. By the way, Are you a teacher in Japan? just curious ^_^.

Depends too on where you plan to live. If you live in my city, Osaka, I would have thought it not too difficult for him to pick up crappy teaching work, 2000 yen an hour type of thing and bar work at 900 an hour or so. The both of you could just about have a nice life here then. If he really is as frugal as you say then definitly so.

There is no such feeling by the embassy. You are right in assuming that the fault lies more with ECC. You will have to consider, too, that apartments for most eikaiwa teachers are VERY tiny, so ECC might figure you would be uncomfortable. ECC might also think your boyfriend is just along for the ride, but that is none of their business.

What I would be concerned about is what your boyfriend intends to do while you are working from noon to 10pm, which is how long you will probably be out of the apartment commuting and teaching. He might be excited now, but give him a couple of weeks with TV he can't understand and an environment with language he can't understand, either. How does he plan to spend his money, aside from chipping in on rent and food?

Yes, for the past 8 years, but never with ECC.

Well this thread isn't about what I thought it would be about. I hope the title isn't too prescient for your sake. Might be best to come over without b/f and get the lay of the land and go from there.
