From everything I've read in this forum it seems that all the ESL school in Zhuhai are schools from hell. Is it the water! Does anyone have anything good to say about these schools?

It all depends on who you speak to......
There are plenty of good schools, and plenty of bad schools. It takes time to differentiate between them.
Zhuhai certainly isn't a write-off, and it's a nice enough city worth spending a bit of time in, despite being given the run-around by various places before you find somewhere you are comfortable and treated professionally. |

I don't know who your informers are but in my opinion they have squarely misinformed you!
There are respectable schools and universities, and there are even good training centres. |

These posts certainly give this impression, but common sense dictates that the location of the schools does not make them nightmare schools, but instead the staff that run those schools.
I find it somewhat hard to believe that ALL of the schools in this city are terrible based solely upon their location.
Who says that they are ALL terrible? Well to my knowledge this is one individual. He or she often goes on about how the PSB are investigating these schools. Now I don't know if it is true and I am certainly not vouching for the schools concerned, but I am curious as to how long the PSB are going to be investigating these schools? This subject has been posted about repeatedly for about 18 months now.
Also, how is that this foreign teacher knows that the PSB are supposedly investigating these schools? I am not trying to be argumentative but I would appreciate an answer from the person who often posts about this, and since this question has been raised. |

I will defend the poster in question to a certain extent, as in my understanding, he was qualified to the hilt, and he was given the run-about by most of the language mills in town.
However - as Roger says quite correctly, there are some wonderful opportunities within the universities, kindergartens, middle schools, and even SOME of the language mills. You really need to invest some time in order to discover these institutions.
My advice for anyone investigating Zhuhai is to start out in one of the standard well-advertised schools, and begin to develop some independance - Most importantly, find your own apartment and register it with the local police. Once you are in this situation, you are free to scope the city for the job that suits you best. Don't let schools hold you to ransom. There is enough demand in this city for teachers, that you can pick and choose between many lucrative and rewarding options. |

Oh deary, deary me, Clarkie aint going to like this - you're implying the best way of finding a job in Zhuhai is to be in Zhuhai, because when I advise people that the best way of finding work is actually to be in China (my advice for newbies or vets), I get get told by the C man that I'm talking bull, and you best do it from all those miles back home safely sat down behind of your internet.
Save money -get an 3 or 6 F month visa (in HK) to travel and live on before finding work. Looks like that would be good tactic for Zhuhai - after all even Clarkie doesn't know whats going on there - and gives you the chance to move on if it really is the FT city from hell!!!
If this is good advice for Zhuhai - should also be good enough for rest of China - but I'm sure clarkie will call me to order again for using the dreaded F word |

Plan B thanks for your reply. I certainly agree with your synopsis and agree that we should give that person that I refer to some credit as far as having actual experience in those particular schools which is more than I have in this particular case. I would however be interested in hearing his answers to my earlier questions so hopefully he will come across this thread.

Please quote me on this vikdk. I really would like to see you actually back up your claims with something so here is your chance. Find the original thread in which you claim that I stated this quote the text and post it in this thread and then post a link back to the original thread.

Let me ask you a question that I asked about this before that thread was locked.
What do you recommend that teachers do after arriving in China and having found a job? As we all know there is a processing period for the necessary paperwork of from one to two months, so in your wisdom what should foreign teachers do during this time? |

great Clarkie looks like your starting to warm to my ideas - looks like we're slowly getting the big C seal of approval - big C backs the idea of coming to China to find a job
as for the 2 months here - why not spend your time reading Clarkies posts (or do you need a C visa for that) - better than spending 6 months at home waiting for paper work and travelling to embassies only to find the whole krap falls through and you end up with nothing
Clarkie a question for you - the vets, FT's who live an' work here - when they change job do they go home (to the west) - according to your logic this would be the best move for them - how do they get arround the deadly 2 month getting a visa period  |
