I know there is quite a bit about teaching in Japan vs South Korea on these boards already (I did a search), but I thought I'd just throw out this question anyway (it's always good to hear fresh views). For the last year I have been working in Poland, but I now want to return to Asia again. My primary goal is to save money. Before Poland, I was working at GEOS in Japan for two years. I am British. I have a BA, a TESOL certificate and three years teaching experience. I am reasonably good looking and can be quite entertaining (I used to do a bit acting, so I don't mind performing). I am prepared to live fairly frugaly, but would like to go out to a bar or a club every once in a while. I don't want to stay in Asia for any more than two years. So, where do you think I can save the most money? Tokyo or Seoul? Of course, suggestions for other Japanese or South Korean cities are also welcome. (BONUS QUESTION: Will two years experience of working at GEOS help me to get a better job in Japan if I return there? I don't see many jobs advertised that offer more than the standard entry-level 250,000 a month. Will I have to start from the beginning again, if I come back?).

Where are you now? Your experience here qualifies you to work in mainstream schools (except universities), but you are going to have to come here to interview.

People say that employers are more unscrupulous in Korea (quite unscrupulous, in fact), but they pay for your rent, so I would think it is possible to save more there. You never know, though, because it depends on where you work here, rural vs. urban environment.

Also, when do you plan to start work? From now to first of April is peak hiring season here.

Ok this is quite simple actually. After 5 years in japan I've spent the past year in Korea. I have ALREADY saved more money in one year here than in 5 in Japan. I, too, started at GEOS and it led to a nice high school position and corporate gigs etc. However, I did not live frugally. I had about 4 months off a year and traveled constantly. The thing is, I still live the same way and still pocket 1000 usd a month. HOWEVER, I do not enjoy Korea a fraction as much as Japan, but like you my priority right now is $$$$$$. So to summarize, Japan is simply a way better place to live, but if you are all about the dinero(comme moi), Korea it is.
Good luck,
Chix
