Hi all
Im new to this site and also new to TEFL as I only gained my certificate just recently. I am a 23 year old (English)female graduate with a degree from a decent British Uni. I dont really have any TEFL teaching experience but I do have some general experience in a primary school.
Anyway to the point ...
I would really really love to work in Turkey, I find the country enchanting and have many turkish friends. Most of the jobs Ive seen advertised (online only) are in Istanbul, which seems understandable, Ive also read that jobs in other big cities such as Izmir and Ankara are also in demand.
Although, if I had to, I think I would be satisfied working in one of the above cities, my ideal location would be somewhere on the south west coast, specifically Fethiye or the surrounding area i.e. Anywhere in Mugla or Antalya. as its an area I feel particulary at home in.
However,I really cant find any hint of a job market in this area. I realise its mostly a tourist area, but I would have thought that in some ways that would have made demand for TEFL teachers even greater.
However I have also heard that generally many of the best TEFL jobs are not advertised on the net, so I wonder if anyone can give me some tips.
I have had brief correspondance with Deulcom International who wanted to give me a phone interview, however that was nearly a month ago and I havent heard from them since. Ive also sent my application to English Time and English First (both of whom advertised on TEFL.com) however, so far no reply . I wonder if Im going about this in the wrong way.
So apologies for the long post, but if anyone could give me any advice on the job market in the south west, or indeed any advice for a newbie wanting to start out in Turkey. I would be very grateful.
Thanks.
All the best

If you are abroad and you have a TEFL Diploma with very limited experience, then no one will really be beating down your door.
Perhaps the more desperate schools.
Deulcom and English First don't fall into that category.
However, if you were in the city, with your Univ Degree and Diploma you would certainly get job offers. ET wouldn't hesitate to accept you if you were actually here. Believe me they've hired those with far less qualifications than yourself.
So, two options, if you want to get hired in Ist. (I know you prob. don't
come here and apply in person, but do it soon, because the closer to the summer you wait, the less chance you'll have (albeit some do hire in the summer).
If you stay at home, you might as well try to increase your experience there, while you wait. If you can't get a job right away at home, vounteer at some immigration facility.
Lastly some families do advertise in the Turkish Daily News for Eng. nannie to keep their kids compay in south of Turkey while they holiday, and it pays damn good. You could also advertise yourself in this publication.
Regards,
'Dude. |
