This is my first post here, so a couple of questions .....
1) " Writing for the Forum"....is there payment involved?
That thread is locked, so I can't ask there.
2) Are there any other ESL Forum sites?
I have scanned Raouls China Saloon. That seems to be a humourous place, a couple of others, less so.
3) Which ones would you recommend?
I am new to China and "English Teaching, so I need all the khelp I can get.

Peter-- here is a bit of khelp, old man.

Raouls china Saloon are infidel SCHISMATICS cast out from Dave's China section. They were gettin a bit rowdy.

There ARE other sites but i never recall their names. That is a testament to the power of BRANDING that Dave has achieved, and has achieved without shortcuts or gimmicks or what have ye.

I'm sorry, I know that is not much khelp, but there you go!! Ask an easier question next time--

all grooviest

I think "writing for the cafe' is for the fame.
Other forums? None as good. asiaxpat is a good source of other news

other khelp - careful to keep a balance between cynicism and trust.

Thanks, so far.....SCHISMATICS. That's a good word, Khmerhit. I actually had to look up the meaning. So they were cast out for being rowdy?
I suppose that's why they run a Saloon now and not a Cafe?

Erinyes...Ta. I think I need money more than fame, so probably keep my writing to myself for the time being.

Further explanation needed, if you would be so kind.

I'd help explain, but I've slid totally into cynicism... Twisted Evil
No, actually I think this was general life advice, Like Polonius gave his son: "neither a borrower nor lender be..."

Cynics, arise!!
I have been surfing as I didn't get much help here....apart from the seaweed!
Are there members here who are also members of other Forums?
So far Raoul's China Expat Saloon seems to be the best one out there...
China Teachers Forum seems pretty dead..
English School Watch doesn't have much on China..
ESLsomething uses a format I don't like...
I looked at a few others, but didn't hang around.
SO! What makes a good forum?
Is there fierce competition between Forums?
Is there a loyalty to one over others?
OPINIONS please.

I think most just stick to one place.
Raoul's is good. Friendly banter, knowledgeable members who don't mind sharing and a lot of job networking.
TESall.com is interesting. Primarily Canadian, but a lot of interesting threads on the industry in general. No trolls or flaming on either of the above.

In terms of sheer size and global coverage however, this place is in a league of its own.

Some posters are members in various forums; the major difference between Dave's and the rest is that Dave's mods remain aloof of the commotion on ground zero while in all other forums mods usually are the most prolific contributors to the forums. They don't see any conflict of interest there...

So which other forums are you a member of, Roger?
Why should mods be aloof? Are they a sort of superior being?
What is the "conflict of interest" between being a mod and also contributing?
I would have thought that a mod with "local knowledge" would be a valuable contributor to any forum, whereas a mod who doesn't have any understanding of what posters are talking about could be a pain in the arse.

I would guess Roger is referring to mods who dominate and control threads rather than moderating. I have seen plenty on other threads related to Japan, rather than teaching forums per se.

I would add that this forum is the only useful worldwide teaching related forum I have come across. There are others with humourous stories, but generally they have little or no posting activity and are more websites to display some teacher's opinions and/or suggested activities.

Well I haven't checked out too many of those forums, but I have noticed a few where the moderators contribute quite well.
This is one I copied. I believe it's from an actual moderator

I realise that this forum couldn't contemplate a real get-together due to its being International, but it shows that some forums are very sociable....or shouldn't I believe that.

I won't discuss with total strangers my membership in OTHER forums but yes, my membership can be checked out in certain forums. However, let me get this clear:
I do not care to join other forums because I don't have the time to visit so many (and some got banned in the PR of C, for ex. machinecat.com). Others failed after starting up because their moderators were too whimsical or didn't do their homework before starting up (eflplanet.com).

My take on the potential conflict of interests if mods are posters is in fact supported by my observations on other websites. Just imagine newspaper editors (who also exercise a lot of power over what is and what is not published, and who can say their choices always are objective, fair or reasonable?) writing readers' letters to their own publication...!
What I notice is that mods that double as posters to their own forums monopolise certain forums and they delete what they want to delete. They also ban posters arbitrarily.

I have been approached by a string of website operators with the request to post in their forums; I watched for a while, then decided it wasn't right for me to take part in their discussions. One reason can be that they have too few posters; another reason might be (reasons vary!) because their founders have a mission that is not congruent with my own intentions (some websites sprang up in response to the popularity of tohers or were started up by people banned from one forum who then decided to take his or her revenge...).
To me, a forum should be open to anyone who has legitimate reasons to communicate with other TEFLers.
