| I am in F ukuoka, and have never been over charged for anything that I know about. A clerk nearly undercharged me once, but I pointed out the mistake. Are you sure that the overcharging was intentional, not just incompetence on the part of the clerk? (Ususally I find these sorts of things to be unintentional- the thing that gives me a better idea of a store's attitude towards foreigners is how quickly and contritely they rectify the problem once it is pointed out.) |

Because of the heat wave they're running out of fans in Britain. Here's a titbit from a news story about it:
In an excellent illustration of the laws of supply and demand, a small electrical shop on Goodge Street in the city center was offering a 12-inch desk fan for $112. A more typical price would be $15 to $30.
But you'd better hurry. The fans -- some of which have been specially imported from China -- are selling like hot cakes.
"I had 44 yesterday. I have two left," said Danny Costello, manager of Rynnes electrical store. He sold one of them during the interview. |

Well, eslteacher, you obviously still have your sense of humor if no money.
I knew there was a reason I left Japan. Gaijin, I mean foreigners, were the nastiest bunch. But that's another thread. |

You might be right that I do not understand the point. But you still have not answered the above question? Did they get your money or not? OR did they just attempt to do it? I think this is an important point. Knowing the techniques that people use to charge others too much can be helpful to others. On more than one occasion in my 13 years since I first experienced Japan some people tried to charge me more than the legitimate price. Not always did I catch them at it I am sure. Maybe they thought my Japanese was not very good. Maybe they thought my math was not very good. Maybe it was just their habit to try it on everyone.
Your attitude towards me speaks of many of the foreigners I encountered in Japan. If I am wrong, you can teach me. You are a teacher, aren't you?
Or do I have to give you only a reply which you find acceptable? |
