Newbie here. I'm sure this stuff has already been talked about, but why are ESL /EFL certificates so expensive!!? I'm just finishing my undergraduate work and kicking myself that I didn't earn my ESL certificate during undergrad. (I'm scheduled to graduate this spring in English and I dont think they will let me continue just to complete that certificate)

Now I just can't decide if its worth it to pay 2000 for a 4 week program or to to get the certificate from a UC extension (I live in California) Is it possible to apply to a masters program in order to receive financial aid and then drop out after earning the certificate or is that somehow unethical? The UC Irvine year long program is way too expensive, around 4000 but the UC Riverside 4 week program is more affordable, but I just dont know if thats reputable.......

Choosing an EFL certification program is really a tough one!

I think it will be hard to get a financial aid package.

At the price you are talking about, why not go overseas to the country you are thinking of teaching in - and take a TEFL Cert course there. During your four-six week course you'd probably spend about the same amount - but will get teaching practice with the population you are interested in teaching, will be able to network with other teachers, and will - most likely - be able to line up a job, all while taking your course.

So many advantages - and you are probably talking about spending the same amount of money either way. But, doing it there - no job, no networking, no knowledge of the local job scene and local students.

I agree with tedkarma.

Also, if you start a course, accept financial aid, and then don�t finish the course (the MA), will you be able to keep the money? I know some of it will already have been spent, but... it just sounds like there�s something a bit illegal about it (ethical or not...).
