Can anyone presently in Santiago give me any information relating to the Curtis language school?
Thanks |

Naturegirl:
I noticed Denise's remarks in the list you emailed me, but I couldn't find a contact for her. If you have one, could you PM me.
Thanks. |

I have talked to Denise and greatly appreciated her opinion, but is there any one else who has worked for Curtis Language Consulting that can offer their perspective? Obviously the more information that people are able to provide the more of an educated decision anyone debating working for them will be able to make.
Thanks! |

I have the same question as the original poster, but since people seem hesitant to put their answers in public view, could anyone with any current first-hand information about this organization please send me a PM? I would be grateful for anything you could provide. Thanks very much. |

I think I have to disagree with those who have had bad experiences at Curtis. My experience was quite the opposite. I arrived in Chile in March of 2003 and worked for Curtis up until June of 2004. My classes were great, and my relationship with Brent Curtis (Academic Director) was pleasant. During the time I worked I averaged around 20 hours per week which wasn't a lot but enough to cover my living expenses (not counting the slow summer months). I don't know what sshinn's problem was, but I experienced nothing similar while I was there.

I`ve stayed out of this discussion so far because I`m not exactly anonymous on this board, but I suppose I don`t really care who at Curtis reads this... I agree with the previous poster about the problems, going all the way back to phone interviews that had to be rescheduled three times because they "forgot" to call me (really annoying given that I was living in Japan at the time and setting my alarm for 4am for phone calls that never came!), a letter of acceptance sent over email which began, "Dear Steven, We would like to offer you a job...", being asked just before my first paycheck if I wouldnt mind waiting a few days until the company had more funds, only to have that happen repeatedly (including when I went down to Concepcion to help them start up their branch down there and ended up being turned away at the bank TWICE because the funds hadnt cleared--I finally got paid THREE WEEKS LATE), being sent to substitute for classes that had been cancelled, etc., etc. Sure, it was a pleasant enough environment, as I believe I pointed out to the people who PMed me, and they`re not intentionally trying to screw over their employees, but they`re just a bit too disorganized and unprofessional.

Hey
Been reading all of the postings....thanks for the info. I was considering working for Curtis...was wondering what they paid their teachers when they did pay them?
Did they pay for air travel? Help with accomodations?
Are there other schools worthwhile to teach for in Chile?
Thanks to anyone who can help! |

I worked at Curits for more than a year and had consistent problems from the beginning until the end. It started with being asked to move here with one week notice only to find myself with 7 hours of work a week for several months. I was in a bad financial situation because I was making less than half of what they had originally promised. They pay late on almost a monthly basis and many of the checks are missing hours. You are often sent to classes that dont exist, without proper material or without any knowledge about the class. Lying to the teachers and the clients is the norm. There are many English institutes in Santiago, it is not difficult to find one that has some respect for their employees. -Stacey |

Curtis is known to be a complex company to work for. It doesn't have strong leadership and pays teachers late (sometimes a month late). I wouldn't recommend them. |
