Curious if anyone has taught ESL in a university/college in Shanghai. Was your experiences positive, can you recommend this school? I have been in China for almost two years but am relocating to Shanghai and am trying to find good colleges to apply at for teaching ESL. Thanks... |

Hi Alexis,
I've been teaching at a college here in Shanghai for about half a year now (technically it's in Nanhui, which is a district of Shanghai, but it's still about an hour and a half from the city center). Anyways, it's been a pretty positive experience. Considering it's a college and not a university, the students are still decent. Anyways, if you have any specific questions pm me. |

I was with East China University of Politics and Law for 2 years. I really enjoyed it. BUT most of the Shanghai universities are moving their undergraduates out to a "university town" that is waaaaaaaay out of the city. ECIT and East China Normal, along with a stack of other univers, Fudan, etc. are all IN TOWN but most have moved their language people out to the "university town." some schools are keeping their graduate classes on their main campuses. so, if you have a PhD they may well want you on the main campus. certainly will not hurt to ask.
I did not come to China to live in the countryside! |

Thank you for your help. I also did not come to Shanghai to live in the countryside. I find it very difficult to know which colleges or universitites to even start applying at. 1.5 hours to just go to a coffee shop sounds horrible.... |

If there is a far away campus, it has been my experience there is a shuttle to take you from the convenient campus to the far away one. This is not terrible, though you are probably looking at a 2 hour commute. |
