Id greatly appreciate some constructive advice regarding my current dilemma. Been living and teaching in Osaka for almost a year full time, and my contract ends end of March. My employer has decided not to renew my full time contract and therefore I lose visa sponsorship. This company will give me miniscule part time work, but this means signing a part time contract with them beginning April.

My visa expires in May. I don't really wish to leave Japan any time soon. I've been doing the rounds of interviews and am now on the waiting list to do ALT work with various companies , but wont find out anything until the BOE awards contracts to all the dispatch companies.

Naturally I've been scouring the better known job sites, including Ohayo-sensei, kansai scene, KFM, KTO, jobsinjapan etc, but there just doesnt seem to be much full time work available in Osaka. It's quite depressing, lots of part time work teaching kids and that's about it. I dont really wish to move from my apartment as some blood sweat and tears went into setting it up and my rent is very cheap.

What are my options? Keep persevering, accepting part time stuff here and there then go to Immigration and hope they say goodo, here's your visa renewal? Korea is starting to beckon now as the last resort.

If your employer is part time you may want to consider self-sponsorship. If your employer is willing to give you some part time workk, you fill up the rest of your schedule with part time ALT work.

As long as your combined income is over 250,000 yen and is regular its possible to self-sponsor your visa. its only possible after you have worked one year.

A long shot is to ask your employer to give you another full time contract, get sponsorship, and after March start looking for other jobs and cut down the hours at your main job.

thanks for your replying so quicky PaulH! I dont think i can self sponsor as my visa is expiring in May leaving me a window of 1 month to coddle part time work and 250,000 in earnings. Also I have asked my employer to allow me to continue working full time but they have said no and are sticking by it. I only have a year's experience teaching company classes nad part time high schools. I also have a CELTA, it appears that the job prsopects are grim to say the least in Kansai and grimmer for me in my present situation!

Have you contacted the chain schools? NOVA seems to be short of people at the moment. Last resort but better than nothing.

I don't believe there is a specified amount one has to make to get self-sponsorship. I've seen people report far less than this and get it.

Just make sure your PT work is willing to provide immigration with the same paperwork as before, and that they understand the change in visa status you are hoping to get.

You could take part time work if absolutely nothing else comes up, fill the gaps with private students, and just ride it until a better full time gig presents itself. You'll find one eventually.
