you should try Lufthansa although they don't fly everyday of the week - $295 is what I paid about 3 weeks ago for Thai Airlines but that was peak season...you should be able to get something better...If you are in Hanoi there is Air Asia which advertise really cheap rates although after tax and all the other $%## not sure what the real price is.

If you book ahead, Air Asia between Hanoi and BKK can be very cheap. I flew from BKK to Hanoi for 1,849 Thai baht (less than $50 usd) taxes included (not including the separate 500 baht departure tax payable at the BKK airport ).
Try Tigerairways.com. I have flown with them to the Philippines. They offer fairs that are dirt cheap but you have to book as separate legs HCMC to Singapore, and then Singapore to BKK. Example: if you fly in March you can book a one way tic. HCMC to BKK via Singapore for less than $90 usd, 50min. stop over in Singapore),
Like Air Asia, due to open seating Tiger Airways is more like a bus with wings than an airline. But you can�t beat the price.

Thanks for your help. We're actually trying to get to S`Africa this summer and the fares I found from HCMC were mind blowing but from Bangkok quite reasonable.
