Hi,
Going overseas is something I've been contemplating for some time now. I'm finishing a degree in Biology/English this May, and going away for the summer doing some jobs in Ontario and the States. In September I was hoping to go over to Taiwan (a long series of thoughts led me to this place above all others) and teach in a private school for maybe a year or two. I have read some posts that talk about how easy it is to get a job over there if you just up and go. I would do that, and I guess I could, but I don't have a whole lot of money and I'd much rather have some kind of job lined up. Do jobs start in September in Taiwan? The other thing is that during the preparation process I won't have a permamnent address (from May to the end of August) so maybe it would be best to just fly over after the summer. I could just make sure I have a visitor's visa and a few extra bucks. I'm just not comfortable with going over and having no idea where to go or what to do when I get there. Meeting someone as soon as I come off the plane would be ideal. Does anyone have some advice on this? I'd appreciate anything, and thanks a lot in advance.

I would go to the TW forum and look at the old postings. Or check out Michael Turton's webpage, he has answers for just about any question you can imagine. One thing to consider is $. If you arrive in TW after June you pay more income taxes ( 20% instead of 6%).
I know it sounds painful but the consensus is to just arrive and spend a couple of weeks looking for work. If you need to have a job lined up, Hess has job fairs in Canada and you might luck out.
good luck

If you line things up before you may get less pay, and in Taipei most schools won't hire you on-line but they do out side, you can contact www.reachtoteachrecruiting.com if you want to get set up well, all the way.
best of luck |

The school system in Taiwan follows roughly the same school year as the States. So, you are little late for checking out that option - rather than the language/cram school route. Language schools hire all the time.
While yes, you will pay more taxes (the 20% rate) it is refunded later if you stay there.
I worked at a two year college just outside Taipei - and lived in Taipei for 18 months - loved it! |
