First, I want to thank Dave for doing such a good service to the community with his website.

Unfortunately, going to the new style bulletin board system has made it harder for me to use this board. The reason is that I have bad eyesight and use very large fonts, which under the old system was under my control. With the new bboard software the font sizes appear to be hard coded and I can't make them larger.

Thus it is much a chore to read, and will be reading less often.

Something to think about when implementing software is, if one cares, to make it more 'accessible', to use MicroSoft terminology.

regards,

My browsing time is severely limited with this new format. Too bad for me. I liked to check in every other day or so and just skim through all the posts and follow-up here and there. It is now a time-consuming project instead of a serendipitous half hour. Very disappointed but I guess this is progress, eh wot?

Hi lurker -

I'm on Internet Explorer for the Mac and can make the fonts larger and smaller. What browser are you using?

I think that this format will just take some getting used to .... it's a lot more powerful than the new format. Messages now make it onto the board immedaitely, and we are no longer closed weekends! Nevertheless, I will be keeping the old forum up until the end of March, so you can still use it at:

I'm using the new browser, Mozilla, which is a free and open source MS Internet Explorer alternative. I also can increase and decrease the font sizes. Furthermore, Mozilla has a great feature called "Tabbed Browsing" which is very helpful for reading through the boards. Basically, you can open up a new "tab" (window) for each message, and it is contained within the browser. You can then flip through the tabs to fip through the posts. It is very convenient.

If you're interested, you can try it out by downloading Mozilla from:
http://www.mozilla.org

No, I don't work for them Smile I just like their product. And it's free!

Dave et al:

I'm using IE6 . Sure, I do use the "Text Size" options under the View menu in IE6, but this only effects the text size not under the BB control, e.g. your headers on your web pages.

Now I realize that if I compose a message I can use the BB option to increase text size but every poster would have to change their text font size to huge (size=24), and I doubt, nor do I expect, every poster to do that.

That is why I don't like hard coding text sizes in software, and is a weakness of the whole Windows software world - the Mac is much better (I used to use one many years ago) or even the ill fated NeXT machine.

Thanks

lurker:

I think I have found a solution to your dilemma.

In Internet Explorer, click
Tools... Internet Options...

then press the button at the bottom which says
Accessibility...

then select the option that says
"Ignore font sizes specified on web pages"

This should hopefully allow you to regain control of your fonts via the "View" menu Increase/Decrease functions.

I hope this helps.

Joe

IE has a defective rendering engine that limits its ability to change the size of hard-coded fonts.

The solution, as has been mentioned, is to change browser and use Firefox, downloadable from www.mozilla.org Apart from allowing you to alter the font size at will it also has tabbed browsing, which is a neat way of having your links load in the background.

I'm using Firefox...it is nice. Opera is another very good browser with some improvements over Firefox.
