Hi all,

I'm heading out to Hawaii next month to look at property, and wondering what the chances are of landing esl related work, especially in universities or colleges on the islands?

Which island? There are a lot of private schools, colleges, universities and community colleges on Oahu, but also lots of competition. There is a community college on Maui and there is the University of Hawaii, Hilo and Hawaii Community College on the Big Island. I don't think they have ESL on Kauai--but may be wrong! You would have to have an MA in TESL to get a look in especially in the U of Hawaii system.

Good luck and have fun with your property search.
Sherri

A little over that but those are residents. Don't forget the numbers of students (many from Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, etc.) who go there for university work. I was an adjunct in my uni's English prep department and that's where most of my students were from. Then you've got language schools for those who want the study/surf holiday, not to mention the visa mills (but that's not really an option even if those places wanted to hire us...which they don't). There is some ESL work in the elementary and high school system, of course, but I don't think that's what the OP is after.

Much as I miss the islands, I can't imagine going back any time soon. Paradise ain't cheap and the scramble to string enough part-time gigs together to survive was more than I could handle. But there's no harm in trying if you have the right qualifications and a bit of patience. (A few connections and a bit of luck would hurt either.)

Good luck, gaijinalways -- and hi to Sherri.

I don't know anything about teaching in Hawai'i. But I do know that in terms of good jobs at any US university a preferred ordering for "background" on the CV would be:

MATESL

US university-level ESL

Overseas university-level EFL

Other EFL teaching

Without some university-level teaching it might be hard to get a job in a university IEP-type program and you might have to target "adult ed" style classes instead.

I have a sobering thought for the OP.
I met an American teacher who has taught in Tokyo about 10 years. He is from Honolulu, but teaches in Tokyo because there is more opportunity than in Hawaii.

In Hawaii I heard that there is decent work in translation (Japanese-English) but your Japanese needs to be real good.
